Been at the forefront and been at the lowend all in the span of the last 3 years as far as hardware. After the k6, p55c, k6-2, p2-300, p2-350, celeron 433 ppga, p3-550. Settled on, now don't laugh -
Intel VS440fx w/333 overdrive chip, 128 meg memory, USB ports. Stable, stable, stable. Did I mention stable?

My quandry - looking at getting a more recent video card as an upgrade. Only limitation is PCI (or is it). I've read about the voodoo's, the diamond xtreme(not a choice), 3dlabs vx1, and a couple of others. I don't play Unreal, Quake, or anything like that(yes there are other games). Race sims mostly, some sports. Suggestions are welcome - and no I'm not going to replace my system to make a board work. At least not yet.

Am I looking at Voodoo only?

Thanks to all.

Depends on your price range, below 80$-- Voodoo3 2K,Stealth3,TNT2 M64(personally I'd go with the V3)
Over 80$ things narrow V3 3K,Geforce2 MX

Didn't know the Geforce2 MX came in PCI. Is it stable?

When you say you would go with the V3 - 2000 or 3000? Like everyone, I'd like my cake and eat it too, but I don't mind spending some on stability and compatibility. Anything about the Voodoo 4500?

Run, dont walk over to the for sale/trade board and get yourself a PCI 3DFX V5500!! There is a guy selling them NEW OEM for $165. A steal! The V5500 will be stable, fast and have great 2D to boot. Here is the link.

I would get a GeForce2 MX PCI. Inno3d offers one of those, and last time I checked they were ~$130 at Ocie.com. The 2nd generation Trasform & Lighting chip of the GeForce2 MX would take some load off that CPU, and some sports games are optimized for T&L. I've heard that Madden 2000 is? Plus T&L may be implemented more in upcoming games, but the V5 5500 does not use it.

I thought about the MX also, but he said he wanted something stable. The Voodoos are rock stable, easy to configure, have great compatibility and don't have this driver of the week club thing. The Voodoos also are better performers in PCI version than any other card. It also has FAR superior 2D quality. BTW, new driver were just released. From the Voodooextreme web site:

<< Now with T&L! 3dGamers has the new Voodoo 4/5 drivers up on their page for your downloading please -- this brings the version count up to 1.03.00. There is a tab for T&L support (That's Transform and Lightning, not Tits and Legs) and better performance (For all you quick shooters). Check em out, unless you don't have 3dfx, in which case it would be stupid to download them. >>

Edit: I'd be skeptical of these new T&L drivers. Seems like they are a software feature, not true hardware T&L. Have to wait a few days for the dust to settle and get the reports. Even so, you would be very happy with the V5500. Especially for $165.

I think I hear a Voodoo calling me.

Oldfart - I did see that link a few days ago - man that price is a killer one. I've seen retail and other prices at the lowest
$240-$290 range at best for the 5500. It's even dropped since last Friday.

Kind of funny to see a video card with as much physical memory that some servers I worked on as recent as 3 years ago.

Thanks

That price is smokin! I feel bad for that guy. He is offering an incredible price on the card, but everyone wants an AGP card. The Voodoo cards run nearly the same speed AGP or PCI. The newly released drivers look like they give a nice performance boost also. For your setup, this would really be a great card. Go get it, you will be very happy with it.
