Upgrade route

I wont be able to do ANY major upgrades until about September this year, and my budget at that time will be $1000 for a motherboard, cpu and possibly RAM.

I could at that time upgrade to an AM2 system, wait for quad-core, or get a new dual core socket 939 processor, motherboard, and some great DDR RAM and other upgrades.

My specs when I am ready to upgrade will be as follows:

A64 3000+ Winnie
Chaintech VNF4 mobo
1GB Corsair VS
XFX 7800GT
WD 300-320GB HD w/ 16MB cache (possibly 2)
Fortron AX500-A

So my question is, given my situation, which route with you go with? AM2 system when I get money, quad core system when its released, upgrade processor to a dual core 939 and other smaller upgrades (maybe a new video card at that time?).

You already have a 939 set-up. I wouldn't go to AM2, since you'll spend all your cash and get basically the same performance.

See how close we are to quad-cores, but if they're still a long way oof, grab a dual-core.

Then again - do you really need a new CPU?

Rod got it right imo. I'd stick with 939 and get a new high end Graphics card, a second gig of RAM and new dual core CPU.

But what's the point of this thread? Are you wondering if you should go for incremental upgrades or a rebuild come AM2? I'd say incremental.

AM2 wont offer much of an advantage. just upgrade the cpu to dual core, and then get one of the new graphics cards taht are coming out. and, pick up 2gb ram. that will easily last you into 2007 when amd + ddr3 comes out.

planning for how to spend money

and hey, I just realized that half of this thread will be flawed, im looking to get a new motherboard (939, if i go that way) too

so if i need a new cpu and mobo, shouldnt I just go with AM2?

Isn't that a little silly to ask people to speculate on what the best way to spend $1000 will be in September?

I can pretty much guarantee you won't be able to get a quad-core system by then. The first quad-core CPU will be Kentsfield in "early or mid 2007."

You'll probably be able to get a Toledo X2 for around $300 and a good motherboard for around $80.

I find it odd that you have a 7800GT (looks like gaming is somewhat important to you), and yet you're not even mentioning the possability of upgrading that in 8 months. Why do you care about quad core when almost nothing benefits much from dual cores yet? That's not all going to change overnight.

i just got the video card like 3 weeks ago
i know that quad-core wont be available til 2007, it was just one option
depending on how much other things add up to, I may well end up getting a new video card too

the point of this thread is for me to decide how much money i will need to make in order for me to get most of the things i want
