Newbie to the board.I am running a amd 1600, considering upgrading to a 2400. Is it worth the $, will I see a noticable difference in speed.

ecs K7S5A
maxtor 80 gig 7200
g4 ti 4200 128 mb
512 ddr ram

For most people, its not really worth upgrading from a 1600+ to a 2400+, but it really depends on what you use your computer for. If you primarily surf the net and play games, then your windows will open 3 nano seconds faster, and you might see your framerate go up a bit, but you probably won't notice either. In this case, you would be better off selling your gF4 and buying a 9700 or saving up for a NV30. However, if you do a lot of CPU-intensive tasks, such as heavy duty Photoshop filters, MPEG decoding/encoding, 3D SMax, etc, then you should definitely notice the difference. I might suggest that you start by just overclocking your CPU. Most 1600+s will do 1.8GHz (2200+). With the increased bandwidth, your performance will be pretty close to that of a 2400+. I'm thinking that most likely, a Barton or Hammer would be the next "noticable" CPU upgrade for you.

Thank you for the advice . I haven't purchased the g4 ti 4200 128 mb yet. My current card is a hercules 64 mb g2 mx400. I take it you don't like the ti 4200 series. For my price range, and being that I don't do a lot of gaming, it seemed like the logical upgrade for me at this time. re: overclocking my 1600+ I have an ecs k7s5a, and am not able to overclock with this board. Any suggestions on what I could upgrade on my system ? Boy, I sure thought a 2400 would really improve speed. Oh well, guess I'll wait for the new amd's

ecs K7S5A w/ 1600+
maxtor 80 gig 7200, maxtor 30 gig 7200
g2 mx400 64 mb
512 ddr ram
16X dvd
32X sony burner

There is an overclockers bios you can flash to, a 150MHz fsb if your memory is decent would give you a nice boost to 1575MHz, cpu willing.

Its not that I don't like the Ti4200 cards, its just that if you spend the money on a video card upgrade, you'd be more likely to notice the difference. But again, it comes down to what you use your system for.
