Upgrade question

Hi there,

I want to upgrade my system, but can't afford a new box, so I thought I might go for the ASRock board that will support my AGP x800 and my 2gb of DDR400 but allow me to get away from my old Barton 2500+ cpu. I am wondering how much of an fps improvement I could expect to see in a game like WoW if I move to a 2.16 Ghz Core 2 Duo.

When I o/c my barton by a couple hundred Mhz, my framerate improves substantially.

That leads me to believe that I may in fact see a decent gain in average framerates if I upgrade the cpu...

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks very much!

With a Core2Duo, you'll unleash the full potential of your x800GTO. WoW is very bandwidth consuming due to loading soo many characters, and processing so many actions.

With a Core 2 Duo his X800 will be a definate bottleneck.

Is that what he meant though? Looking at it as he will reach the full potential of the x800GTO, most likely better than he had with the Barton's. Upgrading one or the other there will always be on that's causing the bottleneck.

You should see some performance gains, but what you get out of that will be what you get until you decide to upgrade your AGP(not worth it IMHO) or push towards PCI-e. Which would suck considering....

whoa whoa whoa...

Hold on. With the Core 2 Duo won't you need DDR2 memory? And are there any boards that support AGP with the Core 2 Duo's?

Also,

I do not see any boards from ASRock that supports AGP for Core 2 Duo's. Are you mistaking the processor you're looking for with the AMD Athlon X2's(also Dual Core). If so there is a board that has AGP built in with those processors, and will allow you to keep your 2gb of DDR400 memory.

I went from a P4-3.06 with HT(which is faster than your 2500+) to that same motherboard and E6400 with an X850XT AGP and my framerates doubled and tripled in many games. Games that were previously unplayable at high settings(like BF2) are a piece of cake now. 😀

I highly recommend the upgrade. Best "under $300" upgrade I've ever had.

Yeah, but an X850XT is much different than his X800.

I still think he would see dramatic increases in framerates.
