 Just replaced my Core2 Duo E4300 with a Core2 Quad Q6600, straight exchange, but from the get-go, it didn't seem to be working quite right. Hoped that b/c they were same socket, could just perform "drop-in" upgrade, but when booted it back up in Vista Home Premium 64-bit, immediately received error message re. "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service has stopped working", which within a day became "Windows Media Player has stopped working" and then a couple BSOD, then BSOD on every boot! Code given:
0x0000007E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF8000985E251, 0xFFFFF98000A05B98, 0XFFFFF98000A05570)

Couldn't even boot up with Vista install disc in IDE DVD drive. Now cannot boot into normal or safe mode either, just get black screen with mouse pointer.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling every component of computer, including processor. Cleared CMOS, loaded BIOS defaults,

Either I have a defective new processor or my video card just died, I think... any help would be greatly appreciated...

did you ever actually reinstall windows, or did you just swap the CPU?

anyways, standard diagnostics, replace each component until the problem is resolved. The last component you replaced was the broken one.

Just swapped cpu... should have done more research first on necessary procedures. Hoping it's not a problem with my Raid 0 array (Raid Manager after BIOS indicates no problems with array) so I could try reinstalling Windows if necessary. Had hoped that would not be required.

Just swapping out one Core 2 processor for another (even if it is a Quad) shouldn't matter.

I highly doubt it has anything to do with the RAID array. Reinstalling Windows should not be necessary either. I have swapped out just the processor on a number of different Vista OS systems...basically upgrading the processor from a slower dual core to a quad (usually Q6600) with no issues. The 1st time the OS boots, it installs a few different drivers, but nothing major.

I bet the processor is bad. Or else something on the MOBO got zapped during the upgrade process (static electricity).

So...does putting the old processor back in solve the problem?
