Upgrade path...

I've decided against the dual AMD setup. I'm going to just upgrade my current system and spend some money on the "extras" of your average computer system (IE. burner, big monitor, etc). So my main question at the moment is what should I get first?

:My future upgrades:
Dell M991 19" $225 shipped (have a 15" Compaq now 🙁 )
Lite-On 24x burner $90 shipped (don't have a burner)
AMD Athlon XP1600+ (or 1700+) $125 shipped (have a 1ghz T-Bird)

I'm going to buy a component towards the end of the week but I'm not sure which to get. I leaning towards the burner since I don't have one on my system at all and it's cheap. Then the Dell monitor, then the XP. Would anyone else do it differently? If so, why?

i'd wait on the burner, or get the new 32x lite-on (wait if the price is too high). you'll probably just kick yourself in a few weeks if you go with the 24x instead of the 32x...or at least i would.

i'd say go with the monitor first. i think you'd get the best upgrade from that (since you're only working on a 15" now). i think it's first better to be able to see the stuff on your computer (monitor) than to have speed...heh.

True on the monitor, I use the exact same one at work everyday. It's a kickass monitor. Only thing is, I would need to wait another month to buy it. I can get the burner this week. I guess I'll get the burner this week (not worried about the 32x, 24x is plenty) and then the monitor next month. I just hope they have a nice deal on them again. 😕

Definately go with the monitor first! A 15" compaq?!?! That sounds painful!! Save your eyes! PS: is that a good monitor? just curious because that's pretty cheap for a 19".

Once again, go with monitor first.

I saw an ad for a 24x Que burner in the paper (in the Frys, or was it CompUSA ad) for $50 today 🙂 Me likes! That would be worth getting now 🙂

Wait on the CPU. AMD and Intel are cutting prices Jan 27. Perhaps, the 1700+ price won't be affected, but the 1800+ may end up costing $5 more than a 1700+, being the new value point processor (1700+ is the current value point processor).

It's a pretty good one. Not the flat screen ("Trinitron") but still a damn nice monitor. They also have a 20% off deal going on and free shipping. I guess that's why it's so cheap.
