Upgrade P4

I've got an emachines with an 845g chipset and a P4 2.4@533FSB .13micron. The bios is locked, but was wondering could I drop a p4>2.8@533 in this thing and the bios detect it?Any suggestions, welcomed.

Probable could, but I doubt you notice that great a performance jump.

Better to save your pennys and just upgarde the board and CPU later.

Yea my next machine I want to build my own(would be my first). Only thing is I got a real short fuse sometimes and I would hate to mess something up. I use to mess up my gateway all the time when I first got the thing back in 96, granted things have come a long way since then. Is building your own that tough? I want to have all the tweaks on my next setup. Being that the cpu is locked down sucks. Although this machine has done well with everything I've thrown at it and I have had for it 2-3 years now. Nevertheless I've upgraded just about everything on it. Even has a 4x agp slot which was the buyer for me back in the day. Thus, I thought I would stretch the life a little more.

Might give a little bit of a boost. If your motherboard supports hyperthreading, than a 3.06ghz (533FSB) northwood would be a decent upgrade. It's the only 533fsb P4 that has hyperthreading.

Do you know of a program that could identify if the board supports HT? I believe the board does support it, but maybe disabeled or something, not sure.
 
Would have to know the exact model of your motherboard. I think there was a program to test weather your system was hyperthreading ready, but I can't find it. If you can look at the motherboard to identify it, or try using a program like everest to identify the exact motherboard, then we could figure out if it supports it.

This is the chipset which intel states supporst HT. I'm just wondering if it is turned off somehow. I see nothing in the bios relating to it.
 
You'll only see it if your cpu supports hyperthreading. A non ht cpu won't show anything in the bios.
 
Usualy the hyperthreading setting won't show up in the bios, unless you actualy have a hyperthreaded CPU. i know that chipset supports HT, but that doesn't neccesarrily mean the motherboard does. More than likely it does, but not neccassarily.
 
My case temp stays around 36c under load, CPU gets to around 53-55c under full load. If I raise my FSB any higher the system doesn't stay stable, Prime 95 errors out quickly, and I get BSOD. Even with higher voltage it still craps out. I know my ram isn't my limiter, as it's run at 250mhz FSB with no problems, and I've used dividers as well just to eliminate the ram. This chip was running at over 70c even underclocked to 3.2 and was throttling with my thermalright XP-120, my 3.2ES chip on this same board, with the same heatsink, never got over 63c, so it just seems this chip can't take any more. It's also possible that it's got something to do with my SATA raid array, I may try using a PATA hard drive later, just to see if thats limiting my OC.
