Probably wouldn't be that big of an upgrade. I would recommend building a new system.

Sir,
That CPU would be a waste of money.
You would not notice any performance boost checking your email, surfing the internet or using MS Word.

I'd go with option b): "Waste of money".

Your mobo is not configured to accept that newer processor.
Also, the difference between the two CPUs will be minimal, in any case.

I have owed both CPU's. If you would like to overclock then the Athlon II is waaay better. Still would only buy one used for $20 though, not new.

Hal24,

If you’re going to upgrade your hardware, you should strongly consider upgrading your operating system as well. Just as Paul878 mentioned, Windows XP is getting closer every day to its End of Support date of April 8, 2014.

There are some resources that can help you make the decision of which operating system to choose and how to go about migrating to it, such as the Deliver and Deploy Windows 7 page and the Deliver and Deploy Windows 8 page.

Another good resource to take a look at is the Windows XP End of Support page. It can answer your questions about why support is ending, what that means and what to do about it.

The Springboard Series on TechNet also offers guidance on how to migrate to a newer operating system. This Springboard Series blog post can help you plan for and migrate to either Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Mistake. Buy a SSD that will be a bigger performance gain then getting a new CPU .

Then later on when you upgrade from ground up, mobo , cpu , ram you can use that SSD ........ Even if your on sata 2.0 still fast, same speeds just bulk transfer is 300mbps slower... which doesn't effect... app launch or OS boot speed. same 2.0 or 3.0. anyhow gl,,, Wait for a SSD deal and let us know about it and off you go.

BTW there ARE women here, just saying "gentlemen" isn't such a good idea. :)

Regardless if there is or not, it wouldn't matter because their opinion wouldn't be worth much.
