Upgrade or wait?

Hi all!

I've been thinking about upgrading my PC for a while now because of some lag in a few games, but I thought I'd ask what you guys think!

So what I want to know is:
Is it better to upgrade the current rig a little (CPU, maybe mobo?) and sell it later?
or wait until Ivy Bridge then sell?

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
Mostly gaming ... Skyrim, Heroes of Might and Magic 6, Fallout, GTA 4, Sims 3 with lots of expansions ...
Some programming using Visual Studio 2010 and Eclipse.
Some word processing using Office 2010.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
Around 500$, but I want to keep it as low as possible ...

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
Canada! ie newegg.ca and tigerdirect.ca mostly, but open to new suggestions!

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.
No Brand preference :), although i do tend to try and avoid Seagate ... I've seen to many of their hard drives fail ...

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
Will be using all the parts below except motherboard/CPU

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
Will try overclocking, but nothing extreme

8. What resolution will you be using?
1920 x 1080

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Note that it is usually not cost or time effective to choose your build more than a month before you actually plan to be using it.
Maybe within a week, depending on the replies!

X. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software?
No need to purchase any software!

I tend to think I'm mostly CPU limited, cause when I drop the graphics in the games there is still some lag ...

There is also a 10% rebate on Phenom II X4 on newegg ... would it be worth it?

So here is my current rig:
CPU : AMD Phenom II X4 840
GPU : HIS Radeon 6850
Motherboard : ASUS M4A88T-M LE AMD880G
HDD : Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB
SSD : Crucial C300 128GB
RAM : G.SKILL Sniper 8GB (2 x 4GB)
Audio : Creative X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty
DVD : LITE-ON iHAS424-98
PSU : Cooler Master eXtreme 500W
CPU Heatsink : Cooler Master Hyper 212+Not Installed cause it doesn't fit in my case :( ...
CASE : APEX PC-389-C

Yeah, that's what I thought ...

What if I just buy the case, overclock my current proc and save me some money? I guess it would be an even cheaper upgrade ... (sorry I try to avoid spending to much even if it's well within budget, cause I'm still in college :S)

The power supply you're using failed the ripple test in hardwaresecrets' review already at 390W load. http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/arti...me-Power-Plus-500-W-Power-Supply-Review/728/7

So based on ATX specification, you're using a PSU that should be rated below 400W. I would not be very comfortable overclocking on that.

I'd recommend upgrading the case and the PSU now to something decent, you'll have a good base for future upgrades and overclocking that way. Upgrade to Ivy Bridge 3570K later on (same price as 2500K but faster and less power hungry).

Antec 300 is only $40 AR AP (awesome deal)
Cooler Master 690 II Advanced is $55 AR AP
+ XFX 550W for $50 AR, or Corsair CX430 V2 $17 AR AP (better than what you have)

Thanks lehtv!

I guess that's what you get when you get those cheap newegg combos ...

I will do as lehtv recommended ;)
