I currently have a 6800 ultra and I want to upgrade my system. The problem is that 6800 is agp and if I upgrade my system, I will go to pci -e 939 socket. My current setup is amd 3400 with 745 asus motherboard.

I know most people are saying that the 7800 is not worth it but since I am using a dell 2405 (1920 x 1200) do you think it is worth it in my case?

Should I just hold on to my current system and wait or do the upgrade I was planning? (probaly going to a 3800+ 939)

Heck, if you have the money, go for it. You have the system that would see some benefit from it...

The only thing that I would make sure of is that the 7800GTX actually has Dual Link DVI so that it can push your resolution over the DVI connection. I think that all 6800U did, and I read some conflicting things about the 7800 in that first wave of reviews.

That said, the 3800+ won't be a huge step up from your 3400+. I would get the San Diego core 3700+ S939 and oc that up to about 2.65 or so (that seems super-typical) as that is a pretty sweet spot for a system, allowing you to use the DDR333 setting in the bios and oc the front side bus up to 240 so your memory is once again running right at 400 mhz.

Let us know what you end up with and how it works out!

Thanks blckgrffn.

I am also going to attempt, for the first time, to overclock this system. I am a total newb at this so if you don't mind, I would love to see a recommended barebone system of what you would recommend.

motherboard (I was going to go asus but heard dfi is better if I am going to oc), ram, cpu (the 3800 is only $30 more than the 3700. wouldn't it be better to oc a 3800 than a 3700?), and cooling system (fans). Should I get one for the chipset or just cpu? I would like to keep my system quite if possible but do not really want to go the water cooled route (unless you think it is necessary).

I would really appeicate you helping me out here.

Basically, you need to ask yourself two questions:

1 - Am I happy with the performance of my system the way it is.
2 - If not, is it worth it to me to spend $$$ to upgrade from my current X component(s) to Y component(s).

In your case, you would need to upgrade not only your video card, but your motherboard and processor as well. Only you can decide if it's worth that much $$$ to upgrade from your current system.
