Should I upgrade from my 144 to an X2 3800+?

I currently enrolled in my last class at school; it involves OrCAD (CADing stuff), there is also several other programs I will need to run for testing tp the 8051 board. So yes I will be multitasking, will the X2 3800+ OC good?

The X2 3800+ will OC well most likely, and it'll be perfect for the CAD and other multitasking stuff you do.

Mine is now a single core a64 3500+ Venice. How big of a jump in performance, say if I jump to x2 4200 dual core? Mostly gaming and light video/pho editing work are what I do with my AMD rig right now.

maybe in the near future we'll be playing multithreaded games and will need a dual core cpu. Right now, you won't see a humongous difference in games, but will definetly in the video editing and such. If you've got the cash, you might upgrade, but don't sacrifice anything to get it b/c both of you (OP and videopho) have good cpu's still. OP, you could always oc that sucker...

Ok guys which one:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400
or
AMD Opteron 165 Dual-Core

There about the same price, same amount of cache in L1 and L2.

I play games and usually run programs in the background. Right now I have an Opty 144, which I plan on giving to my nephew.

Very true, but it will also be overclocked 400 Mhz already, when it reaches the speed of the non-overclocked 4400. So, if you're willing to see how high you can overclock the Opteron, then go with the 165. If you've never overclocked before, and/or are scared of OCing, then the 4400 will definitely give you a nice performance boost over your Opty 144.

I do OC. the Opty 144 is running stable at 2.7 MHz @ 1.40 V.

With one is better in gaming?

I just got my Opteron 165 in!

Stepping: CCBBE 0617FPMW!

I have OC'ed it to 2.0 GHz, temps 21 C. Will OC more later. Will let the AS5 set in a little.
