Upgrade Old Pentium 2 help

Can I do this? My motherboard is an Intel SE440BX-2
It has the latest bios.

Currently there's a P2 350mhz. I don't know whether its a Slot 1 or socket 370
Is there an easy way to find out by looking at it without taking off the heatsink/fan. Or a windows or linux program. Or even better a bootable cd program.

I have a spare P3 800mhz socket 370 that I'd like to put in it.

I'm hoping I won't need an adapter of some kind.

Take the side off the case, and look. Slot 1 processors stand up, at a 90 degree angle, when the computer is lying on it's side (how they lay while you work on them). You can't miss a Slot 1 or a Slot A processor, they're quite large, and stand upright. If you can't see the processor, because it's hidden under the heatsink, like new processors are, then it's a Socket 370.

I just thought of something. Intel never made a Socket 370 Pentium 2. They made very few Socket 370 PIII's, and they were only made in the 450 Mhz version, unless they made a couple @ 500 Mhz. That means you'll need a "Slocket" (not it's real name), that will allow you to use a Socket 370 processor in a Slot 1 motherboard. Luckily for you, IIRC, the BX chipset was the only chipset that supported it. Or it was one of a very few, anyway.

edit: You'll also need to find out whether your 850 Mhz PIII is an FC-PGA chip, or not. If it is, you have to use a Slocket 2, because the pinout (or something) is different.

Oh and the cpu I want to put in is a 133 mhz bus not a 100. Will this still work?

Nope, that board only supports up to 100MHz cpu's.

I have an 800(100MHz) cpu somewhere in my basement and an old BH6 that still works.

This is a Slot CPU MB. try to get a used 800MB CPU and you get a nice web surfing PC. Make sure bus speed is 100mhz, not 133mhz.

So the numbers on Intels website don't match up for the better cpus. So now the best Cpu I can get to work in my board is a Slot 1 P3 600 mhz 100 fsb with 512 kb cache. If anyone doesn't agree with what I've found out let me know.

And if you happen to have a Slot 1 P3 600 mhz 100 fsb with 512 kb cache with a heatsink/fan please send a PM.

Did your motherboard revision not meet the criteria for the Coppermine P3s?

Nope. So based on the Intel info the best CPU I can put in is the Slot 1 P3 600 mhz 100 fsb with 512 kb cache.

That particular CPU is pretty rare because Intel made some major changes to P-3's starting with the 550e/600e by placing the cache on the CPU die itself, instead of using external memory chips... most likely the 550 or 500mhz versions will be easier to find & most of them should still have the factory HS/fan attached.

Also despite what Intel says on their website, there are many slot 1 to socket 370 adapters that will allow the use of a Coppermine CPU in an otherwise incompatible motherboard because they control cpu voltage themselves. I used to have one made by a company called Powerleap that would run up to a P-3 850mhz in pretty much any slot 1 BX model, but I sold it several years ago. It might be worth your time to post a "want to buy" (WTB) thread on the FS/FT
forum to see if anyone still has one laying around for cheap & I know theres plenty of P-3 800's still around too... good luck!

I never received a PM.

I do have a P3-800/100MHz socket with a "slotket" that allows it to be used as a slot 1. It also has an Alpha heatsink on it that was the shiznit back in the day.

I also have a slot 1 P3-700/100MHz with the built in fan. PM me, maybe I can sell some of my antique stuff. P.S. I have assorted motherboards and RAM too.

Does anyone know if my P2 350mhz slot 1 100fsb 'FAN' will work with an upgraded P3 500mhz slot 1 100fsb? (I'll be getting a heatsink with the new cpu, but not a fan)

You should be able to find a PIII 550Mhz slot 1 CPU no problem, and it likely will already have a heatsink/fan attached to it.
