I have an abit ip35-e and my e6400 @ 3.5. I am getting a 8800gt and was wondering if I would need to upgrade my processor. Is there a worthwhile upgrade or is it better just to wait off? My ram may be a limiting factor for OCing newer processors but I have tested it at 500 w/ fairly tight timings. I have had no problems with this OC for over a year and it seems just as fast as the day I got it!

The only reason you should even consider upgrading would be for a cooler running cpu. The new 45nm chips will probably surpass that OC by a little but at your current speed you already have nearly the best performance available (assuming you don't need a quad for anything).

the only upgrade i see would be for a Quad. thats if u need it. what do u do with ur pc? u might not even notice a difference...

i upgrades from an AMD4800+ x2 to my Q6600 and saw/felt a difference.

theres absolutely no point in getting another dual core.

My e6400 does tend to run hot ~43 idling. I mainly just watch movies/email/some gaming...nothing too intensive.

What would be the point? Your current processor is already considerably faster than an 8800GT. You're GPU-bound now, and you're still going to be GPU-bound with an 8800GT. Of course, you'll only ~half as GPU-bound, with the 8800GT.

If you encode video etc get a Quad as an upgrade, as for gaming, probably little benefit. Although a 6mb cache from E8400@4ghz will certainly give ya a boost, but nothing spectacular.

idling at 43c is fine, as long as ur temps never go over 72C (or whatever the intel spec is)

as long as you're within spec u don't need to worry about ur temps.
