I'm looking to see if I can speed up my encodings time. I mostly use Tmpgenc and Ulead DVD Disk Creator 3. Currently, my duallie box consists of 2 x XP2100+ (stock speed) on a MSI K7D mobo with 512mbs DDR ram and Raid 0 drives. This box currently spanks my Intel 3.0ghz (o/c to 3.3ghz) 865P chipset mobo, HT enabled with 1gig PC3200 DDR and Raid 0 (~2.5 hours vs. ~4.5 hours to encode a 700mbs clip)

If I drop 2 xp2400+ mobile Bartons into my MSI K7D (after L-5 mod to enable SMP), will the extra cache make a difference or will I not really see very much difference? Also, I suppose I can ramp up the FSB as high as it'll go.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

For how cheap you can get the mobile bartons I would give it a go. The worst thing that happens is you run them stock. With the extra cache your rig should be smoking through encoding mpegs.

Get the Mobile 2500+ as I don't think most 2400 have the 512 cache. BUT check what you need to do to make the mobile chips work as I think there is more work then the regular desktop ones.

All Bartons have 512KB of cache, so the mobile Bartons 2400's have 512KB.

Yep, 512 cache confirmed for the 2400+ mobile. :)

Looks like I'll go a head pick them up. Even if they don't substantially cut the processing time down, they'll at least run cooler than what I've got now.

Duhhh... I said Mobile2400's, NOT bartonMobile2400's. Most 2400's WERE NOT bartons. And some sites only list Mobile 2400 without saying if it is 512 or 256 cache.
