upgrade mobo.

I have been upgrading to a new system. Right now I have a 2600+ running at an 1800+ couse my current mobo only supports 100mhz and it cuts the CPU back. I also have 512mb of pc2100 ECC

So I have 2 chooses.

1) Upgrade to a new mobo so that I can have the 2600+ running at 2600+ (same mem) [[for about $50]]

2)I could get a A64 3200+ 90nm S939 ;; 2x512mb PC 3200 2.5 ;; Thermaltake W0011+PFC Silent Purepower 480W [[for about $600]]

If I upgrade to the new mobo (Option 1) then I will upgrade to the new CPU and system some time around the new year. What my question is. Should I keep on trucking with what I have atm and just upgrade it. Or just go for the full new system now? it would be hell of alot cheaper to just upgrade the mobo. and was mostly just wondering if i would see a diff with just getting a new mobo.
 
I depends on if your computer is currently doing what you want it to do. Personally I think the new motherboard is somewhat a waste of money, because there isn't to much room for upgrade. By that I mean you can only go to a 3200+. What about going with 754? You can get:

Athlon64 3200+
Soltek nForce3 250Gb Board
1GB Corsair Value Select CAS2.5 RAM
Your PSU

Cost:
CPU: 204
Mobo: 99
RAM: 158
PSU: 66.50

Total 527.50

If this is too much right now, then don't upgrade in my opinion. because with the new motherboard you only gain minimal performance and are that much further away from a real upgrade.

Man, just buy a $50 nforce 2 mobo and call it good. Save all that money until next summer and get a dual core :-D Oh yeah, a 1800+ to 2600+ is going to be a jump that you appreciate. If you don't like it, send the mobo back, lose $20 (with shipping and such) and bite the bullet. That really isn't to high of an opportunity cost, IMHO.

I disagree. One of my computers is an 1800+ nforce2 and my wifes is a 2400+ nforce2 and I can't tell abit of difference in them. My brother has a 3400+ athlon RIG and THAT is a HUGE difference. But like I said it depends on if your computer does what you want it to do, if it does then don't upgrade anything, like blckgrffn said wait until next year and jump onboard with dual core.

yeah but when duel core comes out its going to cost a arm and a leg. i think i will just get the modo. sence it is only 50 bucks. and its not any diff im only out 50 bucks... i so wanted one of the A64's but i guess there is no reason to upgrade atm.

i just play games. and as long as they look good i dont care.... im not all nuts over FPS... as long as it looks cool 🙂 im thinking that the incress in FSB will more of a advantage than the upping of the CPU MHZ's....

anyone know if the ECC mem i have will work with the " Gigabyte "GA-7NF-RZ" NVIDIA nForce2 400 Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket A CPU -RETAIL" i cant fine the mem info on giga-bytes site. it should thow. right? (P.S. dont ask me why i bought ECC mem in the first place lol)
 
Is it worth $50 for a couple of months of just a little more speed?
You can sell your old computer then for $50 less and sell it quicker.

i should see more than just alittle more speed right? it should be a nice little jump. a bigger jump than from 2600+ to a 3200+. right?

should i get the Gigabyte "GA-7NF-RZ" NVIDIA nForce2 400 Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket A CPU -RETAIL "OR" GIGABYTE "GA-7VM333M-RZ" VIA KM266 Pro Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU -RETAIL... i was thinking of the nvidia but send i have a ATI GFX card im kinda unsure.
 
Ditto on the NF7. If you insist on keeping the lousy RAM, you could at least overclock the chip using the NF7's wonderful divider selection. YMMV depending on your particular chip.
