upgrade issues

I was trying to build a computer for my parents and ran into a strange trouble trying to upgrade. I booted off the xp cd fine, then the install seemed to start fine when it was loading up different stuff, but shortly thereafter, the install would just freeze. It would freeze at different times, i.e. one time it froze at the formatting screen, another time it froze at the disclaimer page, another time it froze around the time it says "Starting Windows" at the bottom of the screen. So what I did is put the drive in a different machine, and I was able to install xp fine. I'm thinking maybe the IDE controller on the original motherboard is defective/flaky. Does that make sense?
 
We need hardware details here so we can better help you. List all you got. Some temps would be great, too. 🙂
 
Mobo: Biostar M7NCD
CPU: AMD XP 2100+
HD: WD 120 Gigs
Temps: 52-54 deg C
RAM: Kingston 512 MB

This is the rig I had the problem with. It was a brand new drive, nothing on it, trying to do a clean install of XP. I had tried to install w2k, but had the same problem, so I thought maybe my w2k cd was corrupted, but had the same problem with xp. Thanks for the help.

This was going to be a fairly low end budget pc for my parents who dont play any games.
 
Make certain the CPU cooler is properly seated and oriented, I never trust temp readings. If heat isn't a problem the next usual suspect is bad ram. You can download and run memtest86+ on it and see if it has errors, or swap for another stick if possible.
