Upgrade Haswell-Ref To SKYLAKE Or Next Generation

Hi Friends


My CPU: Intel Corei7 4790K , I decided to upgrade (CPU).


To increase efficiency In The GAME.

In your opinions, how effective were upgraded to SKYLAKE.

Or wait for the next generation.

Unless you are seeing actual CPU performance problems in your game or your PC seems to be breaking...I don't think that upgrade would really be worth it to be honest.

Too much money for too little of an effect.


That's just my opinion though.

Not worth it IMO. The performance increase from a 4790 to a 6700 is something like 5% on average.

Wait until whatever comes after Canonlake at the very least. Intel might finally put a 6-core on the mainstream platform by then if Zen can claim some marketshare.

Get a new GPU (980Ti), or a 2nd 290/290X. Then get a new monitor (1440P 144Hz, or 4K).

With your GPU, i7 6700K platform is a total waste when an after-market 980TI smashes the 290X. Before you even get to a 1440P monitor or 980TI level of GPU performance, you shouldn't even be thinking Sklylake unless you upgrade on the very cheap after selling the 4790K platform.

It's not worth the cost to upgrade. There are only going to be an occasional situation where the i7 shows real improvements, and even then it'll likely be hard to tell.

Wait a few years. CPU's don't need upgrading every couple years like GPU's. They last many years between upgrade cycles as long as you buy a good one, which you did.

Thoughts on Ivy Bridge owners like me with a 3770k? I have mine sitting at 4.3ghz and have been holding out. I like the possibility of the Broadwell-E lineup being 6-core, 8-core and 10-core. I may jump on the enthusiast bandwagon if that happens. Reading the Skylake reviews I'm just not super impressed and don't see a 6700k being much of an improvement. Thoughts?

You're in the same boat I am in. The 6700k just doesn't make sense with the current elevated pricing. I've been very close to pulling the trigger on the 5820k and 5930k during these holiday sales, but I'll probably hold out for Broadwell E and KabyLake at this stage. I'm hoping we will also see some refreshed X99 boards with the Broadwell E launch as well.

Personally, I find it hard to believe your system struggles too much with those games given your build specs. Therefore, if I were you, I'd wait until nVidia launches Pascal and then possibly upgrade to that. Worst case is that the 980Ti drops significantly in price with the launch of Pascal and you can pick one of those up instead.

So I would say wait till 2025 before looking at upgrading the cpu.

Remember, that those are ~5% increases are over the previous model, which means the added 5% takes a 5% increase as well. That may very will end up a bigger improvement than 30%. Not to mention feature changes.

But I agree, it could be 10 years before you up grade again, though 5 years is probably when most people would. I lasted 7 years from my i7 920 to my new i7 5820K. OCing also played a good part in that, though the 4790K doesn't need to OC as much as my i7 920 did.

Yea, I dont understand this thread. 4790k is pretty much the top of the heap as a gaming processor. The only reason to "upgrade" from a 4790k is to go to the HEDT platform with HW-E or BW-E for highly threaded productivity cases, which apparently the OP is not planning to do.

If you see Fallout 4 then a 6700k is already 30-40% faster than a 4790k. And there are other situations where a 6700k is 10-15% faster than a 4790k.

By 2017 a 6700k will be on an average 15-25% faster than a 4790k in modern 2016 end games. Most likely.

And a 6700k is already 40-60% faster than a 2500k. So the bare minimum to play modern games is 3770k or 4690k. And a 6700k does help quite a bit.

You need not upgrade a 4790k today. But in max 1-2 years you'll feel you have outdated hardware.
