I'm looking at upgrading my PCIe x800XL.

I'm considering a card in the Nvidia 7900 series, or an ATI in the 1900 series. I don't really need bleeding edge, although I do play some games. I may even splurge and go for a 8800GTS if I can find a deal.

One of my concerns is Linux. I've started playing around with a few distros, and I find that about 50% of them or more won't even boot with the x800XL. I'm not sure if this is the video card, the motherboard chipset, or a combination of both.

I definately want to spend less than $200, but around $150 would be a good sweet spot.

Of course, I'm willing to go more if I can find a 8800GTS at a good price.

nVidia has a better Linux support than ATi, but for the 200 budget, you can get a GeForce 7900GS, or an ATi Radeon X1950PRO but bear in mind that the latter has better overall performance which can even rival the 7900GT. Don't even bother with a 8600GT/GS series, those cards lacks of performance.

yeah you can get a 7900gs for about $120.00 AR at newegg, and the x1950 pro for about $165.00. I would go with the 7900gs 256mb if you game at resolutions below 12*16 and the x1950 pro 512mb if you games at resolutions higher than that. both great cards.

Well... I also have a Dell 2407WFP on the way, so I'm considering the x1950 pro. I'm going to watch FS/FT for the next couple of days before I do anything. Never know what will turn up.
