I need some advice on upgrading my PC to be better able to rip DVDs to watch on my PSP, it takes forever. Here is my system info:

P4 1.4Ghz
MSI 845 Ultra
Radeon 9800 Pro
1GB Ram

I'd like to spend less than $100 and was wondering if I should try to find a 3.0Ghz socket 478 cpu or upgrade my motherboard and cpu to something more readily available...745, 939? I havent been involved in building since I built my current computer several years ago so any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

Grab an all new cpu and mobo. If your 9800 graphics card is agp then maybe go with a uatx board w/ integrated graphics. You can't go wrong with amd x2 or intel these days. Some amazing deals and combos on cpu+mobo. a real budget combo would still be a massive increase over your current sys. Look at newegg, microcenter, and in the hot deals forum.

When I say you can't go wrong with intel, that's assuming you get a recent product based on their core 2 architecture. You could go wrong with pentium 4 or pentium D and certain celerons.

Spend less than $100? With a few rebates, you could get an Athlon X2, AMD 780G motherboard, and 2 GB of DDR2, for maybe a hair over $100.

An 845 chipset based board is probably only going to run 533 mhz bus CPU's. The top 533 mhz P4 is a 3.06. Whether your board supports that CPU is another story. My guess would be your board would support a 2.4 or 2.6 cpu, which would still be an improvement.

The other thing that helps an 845 board is to install the Intel Application Accelerator. I had this help encode DVD's faster when I had one of those boards back when.

Here is the board info from MSI:

CPU
Support Socket 478 for Intel® 4 (Socket 478) Processor.
CPU Supports 1.3GHz to 2.2GHz and up

Chipset

Intel® 845 chipset. (593 FC-BGA)
AGP 4X slot (1.5v only)
400MHz Intel NetBurst micro-architecture bus.
Support 100MHz FSB.

So I guess my next question is Athlon X2, 780G motherboard, 2GB DDR2 faster than upgrading my processor to 2.4 or 2.6 intel CPU? If yes any recommendation on an athlon mobo/cpu combo?

Thanks for your help!

A 780G with a new Athlon will be faster than any Socket 478 CPU.

If you decide to keep your current setup, I could sell you a P4 2.4 for $20 shipped. A new system will give much better performance, but this might be a cheap option.

Edit:
Shipped price is assuming I can do it for $5 or less. Anything extra I would have to charge for.

Baed on your comments I researched some parts and came up with this:

CPU
AMD Athlon X2 4850e 2.5GHz Socket AM2 45W Dual-Core Processor Model ADH4850DOBOX - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819103255
$60.00
or
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Brisbane 2.7GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819103210
$66.00

Mobo
MSI DKA790GX AM2+/AM2 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813130191
$109.99

Memory
OCZ Platinum 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2N10662GK - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820227178
$34.99
Or I could go with one 2GB stick...

Theres a combo deal at newegg 4850e+MSI for $119, so including RAM = ~$155. You always wind up spending more than you planned don't you? ;) What do you think of this?

If your board only supports 400mhz bus CPU's, then the max possible speed is 2.8 mhz. (You can change the bus speed filter to just show 400 mhz CPU's.)

Intel CPU specfinder

If you are looking for the cheapest alternative, the For Sale Forums here, Ebay, or Craigslist should turn up a CPU in the 2.4, 2.5, or 2.6 for around $20. With 2.8's being the fastest 400 mhz, they are expensive in comparison yet. That way you can use what you have. Going to anything newer means new ram, a possible higher watt power supply and a new copy of an OS.

AMD X2-4850e $60
Foxconn 780V $54
OCZ 2x1GB DDR2-800 $14AR
OCZ 500W PSU $24AR

Total: $152

CPU performance will be ridiculously faster than your P4-1.4 and onboard GPU will be nearly as fast as your 9800pro (in newer games maybe faster). And for a few bucks more you can put in a PCIe video card (9600GSO $50AR etc) that will annihilate your old card.

And trust me, you want a new power supply.

Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 2.5GHZ (For prices check some of the previous posts)
Gigabyte G31M-S2L $55 approx
2GB 800MHZ Kingston DDR2 RAM

No need for graphics card now. Onboard should be okay.

Total should be around $100 and plus you can overclock later too.

Don't do this. cpu choice is good, but motherboard is way overkill. ddr2-1066 memory is way overkill.

Do what Denithor says.

Thanks for the feedback. I missed the OCZ memory rebate so I'll probably go with this memory for an extra $10 over your suggestion:

CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820145184
$25AR

Thangs again for all of the feedback. Ill post back once its up and running.

It should be noted that the Foxconn mobo is Micro-ATX. So, I would suggest finding out if your case will support Micro-ATX first.

How can I tell if my case will support a micro atx motherboard? I dont think I have any documentation for it...

Found my case model: Antec SLK2650BQE
http://www.antec.com/specs/solu_slk2650BQE_spe.html

The spec says standard ATX motherboards so I guess a micro atx board is out.

How is this for a replacement to the Foxconn MicroATX:

Most mATX can be fit into most ATX cases.

Do the opposite. I.e look at the data sheet of the Mobo and see if it state that it fits to mATX case and ATX.

Mobo's data sheets are more technically sound than the case's sheets.

The spec at the website and the manual all say form factor microATX. Theres no mention of ATX compatibility...

I do not have your case or the Foxconn that you are looking at.

But I do have a Foxconn 6150 mATX install in a regular ATX Case.

If you look at the Foxconn that you want to buy and the ECS, you will notice that they have similar layout on the left side where the I/O plate is.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...therboard%20-%20Retail

The main difference id the the mATX has less PCI slots so it is Not as wide to the right.

This is usually the construction of the general use Mobos and cases.

It might be different when it comes to cases and Mobos that are specifically manufactured for HP, Dell, and the like.

These are just pointers, YMMV.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who replied to this post. I followed your advice and went with the Foxconn mobo and 4850e. Santa left 4GB of DDR2-800 RAM and a SATA HD under the tree. This is blazingly fast compared to my old setup. Thank you!
