How is an FX-6100 $40 cheaper than an i3 setup?

You don't need a z77 chipset with an i3 because you can't overclock anyway, and an i3 itself is ~$130.

Since you can't overclock anyway you can go with the stock HS+Fan and a smaller PSU, and dump that extra money into a better GPU.

EDIT: I'm not arguing that an i3 is a better CPU than an FX-6xxx all things considered, but that it's not more expensive and that it IS competitive with an overclocked FX-6 in games.

I'm in a similar spot want to build a Guild Wars 2 PC for the other half but money is tight. Can't decide if I should go and 6100 (I live near a microcenter) for about $130 with motherboard or an i3 2100 for apx $170 with motherboard or go for the i5 3450 for about $230 with motherboard.

I commented for the above prices.
Also, If you dont buy a P67/Z68/Z77 motherboard you handicap your upgrading path and you will not be able to fully use a K series CPU later on.

Its a microcenter thing, basically an FX6100 $120 the like $50 off a MB, i3 is $99 but no discount on MB, i5 is $180 with some MB's discounted. Tomshardware seemed to indicate i3's beat every amd product. I tend to over think these things.

Toms Hardware is a sellout
want a 2nd source IMO

Regarding the 3450: if you get a Z77 board, you can use +4 turbo overclocking to get it to run at 3.9 GHz for 1/2 core turbo and 3.7GHz for 3/4 core turbo, all on the stock cooler and with low power usage. For games which use only a few threads, that's roughly equivalent to a Bulldozer at ~5GHz. And it should more than keep its own vs. an overclocked 6100 even in heavily threaded games like BF3.

Well a little update on this cpu, it seems nice, today i OCed it for the first time,i mean i just hit up the multi to 4 Ghz and put the voltage at 1.35,did some LLC tweaking to stabilise the voltages.

So far so good, managed 1 hour of Linpack then i got bored and started playing BF 3,temperatures never go over 38-39 in while playing,in linpack i think it was 40ish.

How am i doing ?

Edit : im loving this "bug" the chip has,it downclocks when its under low loads to about 1 volt and 1.7 gigs,it seems to be steady at 4 ghz when im playing.

Nice to hear you like it. I think it might be the Turbo function,I'm not sure. In any case it's great that it saves power when not fully loaded so you loose nothing 😉.

Its pretty much the APM ,the AGESA thing or what is called ,if i turned on turbo my voltages would go all over the place, like 1.5 for split seconds doing nothing,i hate turbo.

I heard these things can oc,but man 4ghz and it doesnt go over 1.308 on cpuz, its kinda too good to be true (aka bsod incomming).

This is one weird cpu.

And it scales like crazy,im getting + 10 fps on gulf of oman .

I think FX6xxx can easily be pushed to ~4.5Ghz on air,but be careful and monitor the temps. It's a very nice chip, especially for BF3 🙂.
