upgrade from nvidia 6800

I have nVidia's Geforce 6800 ultra
I am looking for something that is double my current Video card performance
and is 150US$ or max 180US$ -
and has support for DX10 and SM 4.0.

With that budget range, you should probably hold off until the Radeon 3850s are released. Not sure if they will double the performance of a 6800U, but they will be faster than current midrange DX10 offerings.

This could be false but somewhere i have heard ATI cards are short lived?
what would be the current Nvidia mid-range DX10 cards??
thanks.

IMO - I would wait to see what new is coming from either camp. Everything is speculation right now but on stuff currently out and $150 isn't gonna cut it for those cards unless you get a X19xx or 7900GTX for really cheap (won't have DX10 and might not double performance...)

Also what are the rest of the specs on your rig as your system could hold back performance on a upgrade especially with wanting to run the DX10 pathways
