upgrade from GF2 GT-S, 9100 or ti4200

I have a GF2 GT-S which has served me well for some time and I want to upgrade and I am looking at a refurb ti4200 with 64mb ($53) or a new OEM Saphire 9100 w/64mb ($51).
Which is the better option. Right now I play BF1942, HL & Call of Duty. I do not want any other suggestions unless they are no more than $53, I am just asking for opinions on these two options. They will be going into a AMD XP1600 running XP pro with 512MB of PC2100 RAM.

Let me know.

Thanks

Would it be an issue swapping ATI on nvidia. I remember quite some time ago when I tried this with a ViperII I ran into driver issues because the nvidia driver left some components behind. If I uninstall the driver from the control pannel should this take care of that problem or would I need to go through and delete individual files with nv in them? Also does the Radeon suffer from the saw tooth effect I have never been able to dodge with my GF2?

4200

the 2 cards might be even at low resolutions but at 1600x1200 4200 is 15-30+% faster.

If they cost the same and 4200 is reliable, it's a no brainer.

They appear to be roughly even in both games in THG's latest roundup. The 8500 is roughly as fast as a 4200 in those games, so either card should be fine for your needs.

In most games the Ti4200 will beat the 8500. Besides, the 9100 is basically a 8500LE which is slower than a regular 8500. Going from an NVIDIA card to an NVIDIA card won't give you any problems, but going from an NVIDIA card to an ATI one will. It doesn't matter, because you shouldn't consider the 9100.

Refurb or not, the thing should work, it just won't come with any extras. The Ti4200 is still the best performing card for under $100.

I just realized the one I was looking at for $53 is 4x not 8x. Anyone have any experience with this card?

ABIT SILURO GF4 TI4200 128MB

Thanks

There isn't much difference between 4x and 8x, especially with older cards like the Ti4200. It's mostly useful in loading level graphics onto the graphics card's RAM. While this may be handy when using a 64MB card (because textures have to switch out often without the optimal space of 128MB and therefore can use the extra bandwidth) it doesn't substantially hinder performance any.

So if I have the choice of an
8x AGP ABIT SILURO GF4 TI4200 128mb at $59 or a
4x AGP EXPERT GAINWARD/CARDEXPERT GeForce 4 Ti 4200 64MB with 3.5ns ram at $53
which is the best to go with?

My Ti4200 is also a refurb from NewEgg. It's been running 24/7 for 2 weeks. However, there are many reviews on various Ti4200s on NewEgg that have unreliable fans. I figure if the fan goes out I can just install a new one, no biggie.

If you're into overclocking, get the cheaper one. The faster RAM potentially has a higher ceiling than the 128MB version. If you plan to keep everything at stock the way it comes, get the 128MB version.

4200 > 9100. A video card is solid state, so there really aren't any moving parts (beyond the cheap-o fan) to wear down over time. Either it works, or it doesn't. The 4200 will be faster, so I have to recommend it. You'd be better off with a 128MB 4200, though--64MB is cutting it close with newer games. There's no real difference between 4x and 8x versions of the 4200 at 64MB: the 4x was 500MHz DDR, the 8x may be 512MHz. There's a bigger difference with the 128MB models: 4x, 444MHz; 8x, 512MHz.

Definitely get the 128mb version.

I had both a 4200 and an 8500 in an XP1700+ system, to test which I would keep, and I ended up going with the 8500. I found it seemed to just play some games smoother... I like the 8500 a lot.. (9100)

The 9100 and 8500 are not equal. The 8500 is a tad faster than the 9100, which is based off of the 8500LE. Typically graphics cards with letters at the end of the name mean they are slower (the XT series being the exception). While you may have felt it was smoother, the Ti4200 according to benchmarks is the faster performing card.
