Upgrade from e8400 to q9550?

Ok I got all my gear and I'm having trouble installing the megahalem. Here is simple instructions on megahalem's site http://www.prolimatech.com/products/megahalems.html

I'm having trouble on part 5. It seems as if the mounting plate is a few mm's shorter then it is suppose too. Any ideas?

I have no idea what to do. I any screw in either side, but once I screw it in on one side, there isn't enough room on the other side. You can see the holess do not match up. I can screw it in with maybe a smaller screw, but I'm not sure what to do! Please help!

your chip should do 3.4GHz @ stock voltage np lol.

as for mounting it, can you provide pictures of what exactly is going wrong? i had no problems at that stage of mounting. and what microcenter did you get this from? i may be heading into the one in santa clara later today and if you live in the area you could even bring it in to show me lol

I live on the other coast. I'm at work right now so I can't take pictures. But when I get back home, I only have my phone to take pictures; I hope that will be clear enough.

Actually, looking at the pictures form the link on my previous post, I feel like I might have done step 2 wrong. I remember being a little confused on which hole was suppose to go into the screw. And I just kinda dropped it in to whichever one it fell into. This might be problem after all... I guess we'll find out when I get back home.

Man I wish I can get one of you guys to come and set it up for me. I wouldn't mind buying you a six pack either ;p

On the far right upper side, is a bracket. The far one one the right is different then the two brackets sitting to its left. It is this far right bracket that seems to fall a little short. (By MM's)

if you only doing this for games, I think the cash better spent on gcard you will see a HUGE boost with that 159 into gcard upgrade. also if you run preety high rez it's not going to matter much your cpu speed, your gcard will be the bottleneck.

Ok guys, I'm back home and I THINK i know the problem. I'm not sure yet though. But something else is on my mind. I don't think I put the right amount of thermal paste on my cpu. And I put some on the bottom of my heatsink and I accidently touched my fingers on it. Is this bad? Here is a picture of my cpu.

a fingerprint contains organics excreted from your fingertips. This disrupts the thermal conductivity... also, it burns... you should clean it up and try again. Although I doubt it will be TOO big a deal, I have never actually left a fingerprint on a CPU before (I always cleaned it up).

I want to mention that when I was working in my case that my ram is actually G. SKill PC-8000. I thought I had DDR2-800. but apparently not according to the sticker on my ram. So how far of an OC can I expect with this ram?

you can get a sizeable OC without even ocing your ram at all by changing the ram multiplier... PC-8000 is DDR2-1000 i think... what is your CPU? mobo?

That Ram should be good to at least 500 FSB! That, on a Q9550, would be 8.5x500=4250 MHz. That would be a pretty good OC for a yorkfield on air.

Just keep it within Intel's 775 45nm vcore specs...

ya, I would personally keep it less than 1.4 V in BIOS, though you may be able to reach around 8.5x500 with around 1.38 Vcore (or less with a good chip) and a good push pull on the megalems. If you can get that high or higher with 1.35 V, than that would be sweet! (some newer Q9550 E0 chips oc even better than Q9650's I hear, and can be the best C2Q chips out there! (not counting the xeon x3380, which has a 9.5x multi)

Getting that quad to 500Mhz FSB on the DS3L is going to be tough. Solid board (I've used the P45 and both P35 versions of that board), but 500 might be a reach. I think 450 or so should be doable. if you get it to 500 though :thumbs:
