Upgrade from E6850 to Phenom II 955 - Worth it?

My E6850 is at 3.6ghz and has served me well but I want to get a quad core setup cheaply so will the 955 offer a big performance difference or not?

Depends, what apps do you run? Core-per-core, Phenom II can be competitive with anything Core 2 offers, and you'll be getting twice the cores. You won't even have to work THAT hard to get a 955BE running at 3.6 ghz if you want to overclock it (might even go higher; 4 ghz is not unheard-of, especially on C3 chips). The 955BE would, at the very least, be just as fast; in multi-threaded apps, it could be much faster. Just be sure to get a C3 chip if you do go for the 955BE!

Have you considered the i5 750? That is a beastly chip and can be found for relatively cheap. If you are lucky enought to have a Micro Center near you, they are going for $149 their. And a good overclocking P55 board is much less than the X58 motherboard.

I think it would be a nice upgrade from an E6850 to a 955 BE, but not a huge upgrade. You wouldnt notice much difference unless you are encoding and doing some heavy multi-tasking.

the only person that can answer this question is yourself.

Are you happy with it?
Then yes it was worth it.

Do you feel its the best upgrade you could of done at the time?
Then again yes it was worth it.

Were you expecting a hugh increase difference between the E6850?
Well that is a iffy, did you oc the E6850?

Do you want a cookie for the upgrade?
OK here's a cookie. 😀

But seriously, no one can tell you if something is worth it.
We can tell you if ur stupid for side grading instead of upgrading, but this doesnt fall in your catigory. 😛

You built a good system, and most definitely an upgrade from your previous, so i would say its a well built system.

Its worth it cuz your getting two cores. That is big time wheter AMD or Intel. Soo yes you will notice the performance boost and go with Phenom II ,, gl
