Upgrade from a 9800pro to a 6600GT?

Thats it basically. Is the performance difference worth it? Would the now dated 'XP' CPU hold back the performance anyway?

AMD 3200+
1Gig Crucial
9800 Pro 128Mb
nForce2 MB

No. The 6600GT is barely faster then the 9800 pro, not worth it at all. That cpu would hold a faster card back a bit, but that cpu coupled with any video card will run perfectly anyway.

Thanks.

I really can't decided whether its worth upgrading this set-up any further. Would an x800 or a 6800 give noticeable gain with the AMD XP? Would the money be better invested in a new MB and 64bit CPU, keeping the 9800pro for a while?

Your cpu is fast enough for anything right now. Save your money and purchase at least a 6800gt or x800 pro. I wouldnt consider it a worthy upgrade with anything less.

as long as the game is heavily video card limited, a new card would help more.
UT2004 for example, loves CPU more than anything, might not notice so much difference in that case.

Yeah, the x800pro seems the obvious choice, as I'm worried about the power requirements for the 6800gt (do they still need two connectors?). Also, this is all crammed into a SFF. Are the dimentions of the x800pro / 6800gt much different to the 9800pro?

Thanks for your advice, by the way!

Games-wise, I've been playing Half-Life 2 and Rome Total War. I suspect that RTW is video card heavy. Where as I read HL2 was a bit of a CPU hog. I don't know where that puts me really, as both games can get slow in 1280 x 1024, with high settings and only low AA.

turn off AA, or drop to 10x7 res with AA, still looks great and you shouldn't have any slow downs, I run bth fine like that...

I do have a little quicker CPU though, Newcastle 3400+

Yeah, thats what I've been doing.

My LCD is the problem... I'm trying to keep all the games in the 'true' resolution of 1280 x 1024 (17 inch display). To go into a lower resolution for improved fps results in aliasing. So I either run 1280 x 1024 without AA or 1024 x 768 with. Both give average to poor frames per second.

Hence the upgrade...

🙁 i dont even have budget to buy a new 9800pro, and ppl are chucking those things out already ?!?!?

6800GT needs 1 power plug, the ultra needs 2

Unless u play doom3, or some other newer titles, 6600GT will not help too much. So either stick with 9800pro or get a 6800GT.

If you play games most of the time, the ur money is better spend on 6800GT over the A64 upgrade.

the ONLY reason to "upgrade" the 9800p to a 6600GT is if you plan to SLI later. 😉

the 6800GT is still considered the best bang-for-buck card currently . . . . . (and also sli capable)

i personally will never run a pair of 6600GT in sli... i mean it cost just as much as 6800gt and not as fast 🙁 takes more power, and louder with that messy sli setup

sli is meant to be used with 2 high-end cards for rich people, cuz it doesnt really help u THAT much, 1.5x as fast as a single card in most cases at best

anyway, go for 6800GT forpe!!

sli is "immature" . . . never say 'never' 😛

no one in their right mind would buy TWO 6600gts for sli - now - instead of a single 6800GT. . . . Think buying ONE now (to REplace the 9800p) . . . . then adding a second (cheap one) when you need the eXtra performance 😉

me?! - i'g go for the 6800GT and consider a second one when it gets "slow". 😉

ask Santa 😛

i'm 'stuck' with a 9800xt and no replacements (unless you count an 8 meg PCI video card)

You should definitely upgrade from your GeForce 440MX, I used to run that before the 9800pro and the difference was astonishing. Although, the recent Anandtech article on DX8 cards in HL2 showed that your card was at least 'playable' - I'm not sure what kind of settings that involves!

If I were you I would definitely get a 6600GT. It seems its not a worth while upgrade for me. But if you want a great performing gfx card without breaking £150 - £200, I'd definitely get it. The 6800ultra's and x800pro are riduclously expensive, I dont care what anyone says!

yes, if i'm a hardcore gamer, i wouldnt have got the mx440 a year ago in the first place. Thought bout upgrading this sept, cuz i'm off school, but university starting again after x-mas, so guess I'll wait for May to upgrade

btw, MX-440 is DX7, it runs most games smoothly under CRAP quality, but I'm getting a radeon9000 from my friend, slightly better i guess

Really? I didn't realise the 440MX was DX7. Is it because its basically a Geforce 2 is disguise?

I remember playing Max Payne 2 on my 440 and it looked good - as far as I can remember.

... yah, actually I played max payne 1 a while ago, looked alrite, I guess in some games the DX version doesnt make a noticable difference.
I did see the anandtech article on HL2 Dx7 and Dx8 vs dx9, and DX7 looked like crap 🙁 i'm not into shooters anyway, those things make me dizzy

I have to admit, I'm getting sick of first person shooters. I loved Half-Life 2 at first, but have gone back to Rome Total War this week, because it is just more involving than any fps could be.

hmm i wonder how much texture quality DX10 will improve, there didnt seem to be any big difference between dx8 and dx9 in HL2, 7 and 8 had huge difference though...

RTS and RPG are the only game I'll play these days, and since most PC RPGs are bad, that mostly leaves me with Warcraft3. beating up noobies on Bnet is so fun 😀

what on earth would require you to upgrade from a 9800pro? And not only that, but to a 6600GT? If you MUST upgrade, X800 PE or 6800 GT/Ultra, but other than that...

Save your money and replace cpu/mobo/vidcard all together in a few months.
