No way, a 770 is already massive overkill (it's probably at least two to three as fast as you need for D3). You definitely don't want a 780 series card for it.

i5 4670(k) - yes
GTX 770 or higher - definitely not

You can stay under $200 for your GPU budget and still be able to max it out at 1440p.

I haven't played D3 in a while but I seem to remember maxing it just fine as long as AA was off. When enabling AA I started to see framerates deteriorate at 1920x1200.

A 7850 is a faster card than a 5870, OP's card is probably sufficient for what he's asking but only just, and dropping a slider or two might help keep things fluid when there's a lot going on. I would like to suggest that he could benefit from an upgrade, but anything more than a 7950 would be silly if D3 is his only goal.

A CPU upgrade will almost certainly help.

Just to highlight my comment that if you're having fps issues with your 5870 it's most likely the CPU and not the GPU...

My 9800 GT with the highest shadow setting on gets around 45 fps in non action, 30 fps in light action and around 23 at stock in heavy action, with Shadows turned off and everything else maxed including AA I get anywhere between 70 fps in non action and 45 in heavy...

Whats the 5870 compared to a stock 9800 GT in DX9? 300% faster?

If I had to put a number on how sure I am that fps issues with a 5870 in D3 are CPU related and not GPU I'd put that number around 99.9%.

The 5870 is pretty much stock 7850 performance.

O/C your CPU or go Haswell first over upgrading your GPU. My opinion.
