Upgrade from 98se to Win2K and major problem...

Ok here is my problem... I decided to drop 98se because of how unstable it is and go with Windows 2000 because i already have XP on my other computer. I FINALLY got the Network card to configure and now my sound (which was working perfectly fine before the upgrade) wont get dectected and i hear no sound. I do know it is some kind of PCI card, im thinking sound blaster but thats about all i know (sorry for the lack of details...) and I need to know if there is a patch for 2K or an upgrade in drivers so it can detect. Otherwise can you PLEASE post a link on discribing a good but cheap (Cheap is the key) sound card compadible with:

  • Windows 2000 Professional
    256 MB RAM @ PC133
    533 MHz
    Plenty of HD space
I can take out my old sound card since it either died or isnt compadible with 2K. I have 2 PCI slots left. Thanks for any help you can provide me with.. 6 hours and all i have is my LAN up and working on this comp again.. :disgust: :|

Have you tried putting the soundcard in different pci slots, sometimes that can make a difference especially with the soundblaster cards.

Depending on the soundcard, there is many times an updated driver when changing over to 2k, but not always. If it is a soundblaster, you might be able to look on www.sblive.com and find something in terms of the type on the card Creative Website SBLIVE

But if you do want to get a new one, they have a good deal at NewEgg.com on this card
Sound Card(specs of the card)

NewEgg's Website for $32 plus $4 shipping

Its a good deal if wanted a pretty good card instead of the one your using now.....hope that helps

First, most cards will run off generic Sound Blaster compatable drivers. Try installing the generic drivers and see if it works.

Then pull it and look at the card to see if you get any clues as to what it is. Then aybe you can find the correct drivers for it.

Third, I use that $16 Sound Blaster 16 at the top of the page of the Newegg link Jason gave you. It works fine in Win 2k. Personally I just don't understand why everyone wants to spend a whole bunch of money on expensive sound cards. If you don't want surround sound and aren't importing and exporting audio, who cares. It works great for error beeps. Actually it works great for games and playing cd's too. If you are really looking for cheap, thats your answer.
