Upgrade from 9600XT

I feel like doing something to my computer and the video card seems like the best thing to upgrade for me right now. I have a radeon 9600XT right now and this is the rest of my system:

AMD64 3000+
MSI K-8 Neo Platinum
WD 120GB
SB Live 5.1
512 Crucial ram

also, i don't want to spend too much money, but i want the upgrade to be worth it, so i guess don't think about the budget.

I would also say a 6800GT or a 6800NU, as you may be able to unlock the pipes with the 6800NU, but with the GT, you have the extra pipes already.

Anything slower than that (like a 6600GT) IMO wouldn't be enough of an upgrade.

I would agree that 6800s are great cards, but for him even a 6600GT would be twice as fast as what he has.

Yes, a 6600GT would be a major improvement. I personally am waiting until next gen.

damn, looks like it is still a bit too pricey to upgrade. Guess i'll wait for next gen and pick up one of these current gens then

Well if you sell that 9600XT you should be able to get close to $100, then you could probably find a nice 9800Pro like $150. I think that is a fine upgrade

IMO, the 9600XT is not a bad card at all. I would probably wait until the next generation of cards. I sure am glad I skipped the FX generation.

I have a 9600xt also...went for a 6600GT and at the lower res that I play games at, I couldn't notice any difference. I'd wait for the price to drop on a 800 and then make a move.

I also had a BBA 9600XT. I just sold it to one of my friends. It really can bring directx 9 apps to your computer at a very competitive level. GREAT lil' card

even a 9800p is a substantial upgrade for a 9600xt . . . .

i'd also suggest the best buy ~$200 (hopefully less) is a 6600gt.

Well if you get $80 for your 9600xt you should be able to easily afford a 9800p . . . . or else KEEP LOOKING in HOT DEALS! - every day!!! There are occasionally some very good prices on the the 6600 series. 😉

[This is the best i can currently find: eVGA GeForce 6600 GT 128MB DDR3/8x-AGP/HDTV-Out/DVI (Retail Box) Price: $195.00 - FREE SHIPPING. . . . if you get $85 for your old card, you need to spend $110 more . . . .
or you can wait till mid-Summer when the new cards are available and when prices should start to drop a bit . . . . certainly by Late Fall this card will be less . . . . your 9600xt is ok for a bit longer if you don't mind dropping the resolution and details a bit. 😉

Try to pick an used 9800 PRO off eBay. Usually Sapphires and Powercolors get sold for less than $150 (ATIs are a bit more expensive).

I went from a 9600 PRO to a 9800 PRO (eBay) and the difference is huge, at least for the games I play. With the 9600 PRO I had to play Need for Speed U2 at 800x600 medium settings, no AA. With the 9800 PRO I'm playing at 1024x7, high settings, 2X AA and the game looks absolutely great and smooth.

Otherwise, if you have more money, pick everyone's favorite: 6600 GT for $195

Better than buying off ebay.

The problem with that is it is of the same generation of card that he already has. In order for an upgrade to be worth while, especially at that price, it needs to be something that has a better feature set and a noticeable difference from what he has. Now, the 9800Pro is a decent card, but the fact that for a mere $50 more, he can get SO much more of an upgrade in a 6600GT. It has a better feature set (DX9c; SM3.0) and is faster than the 9800Pro in most situations. I say get a 6600GT, or if you have the bank, as I said, a 6800GT (or a 6800NU and unlock the extra pipes and OC it).

took the words out of me own mouth 🙂

$200 6600GT for price performance ratio.

If you play at 1600x1200 with quality enabled, $340 6800GT will be a good card.
Don't know if you want to justify extra $140 for it.

Here is a quick comparison of 6600GT to 6800GT => LINK
