I just upgraded froman XFX 6800GS to an EVGA 7800GT. I use 3DMark2001SE to test my video card whenever I upgrade. With the 6800GS my toip score was 22,000 on default settings. I reformatted and installed the 7800GT and ran 3Dmark and my scores actually went down to 21,000. I thought the 7800GT would be much faster than the 6800GS but it isnt so???? Was the upgrade worth it? I don't know much about all the other stuff as far as pipelines and such but I am just wondering if the upgrade was worth the extra $100??? Is there more to the 7800GT than I am seeing?? Someone please ease my mind about spending an extra $100... Explanation??

Explanation: Use of a 5-year-old program (which is mostly a CPU test, afaik) to test modern video cards.

Solution: Try 3dMark05, if you insist on a synthetic benchmark.

That and dont rely on synthetic benchmarks. May show number differences but go play the games that might of been dropping some frames with your old card and you will notice a difference. :)

Use a newer synthetic benchmark besides 3dmark01 which was made in 2001 and probably designed for a GF4 TI4600...

3dmark05/3dmark06 instead

or just actually look for the difference in FPS while playing Doom, HL2, FEAR, or BF2

I was in the O/p's same boat, a little bit ago. a 6800 gt, to a 7800gt which oc'ed to gtx levels. First run, eh, its alright. Tweaked the thing, and that champ roared. Max res and detail on a 17" monitor. nice nice nice.

On another note you will notice huge differences at high resolutions and high aa/af settings.

Definitely use 3dmark05.

I ahev been using 2001 since 2001 and the scores are familiar to me. If I usse 2005 I wont know if I have a good score or not since I am not familiar with it. I will start using it but I would still appreciate it if someone would tell me the biggest advantage to the 7800GT over the 6800GS.

With a 7800GT you'll be able to use better / higher image quality settings, higher resolutions, and enable some more things while having more features. TSAA? :p

Also... don't buy a video card just to run 3DMark. Especially 3DMark01. It's more CPU limited than anything right now.

Evga 6800GS C/O Superclocked Edition this review has a 6800gs running at 490/1300mhz, and still falls well behind a stock 7800gt (400/1000mhz) in performance.

6800GS Fillrate (490 mhz) = 5880
7800GT Fillrate (400 mhz) = 8000

Plus the 7800GT has a more efficient architecture . . .

You figure it out from there . . . ;)

Post the scores in this topic and you will be told if it is a good score or not if you search around people post their scores so you will get a general idea eventually
