Upgrade from 4200+ to a 6000+

When I built my PC last August, the one thing I wanted in my CPU was a 2x1MB Cache - unfortunately the 4000+'s sold out everywhere when I went to get it, so I settled for the 4200+'s 1MB Cache. I place a lot of HL:Source based games which is CPU hungry.

My question, is it worth it to upgrade to a 6000+ for the performance increase + 2x1MB cache, or should I just hold out for the next wave and rebuild my entire rig then?

I wouldn't upgrade. Maybe your video if you're running vista. I'm still using a 3200, and don't even want a dual core.

Not worth the upgrade if you don't OC, and definitely not worth the upgrade if you do OC. That extra 1 MB cache makes about a 5% difference at the very most, so it's not going to be very noticeable in real-life use.

I would only upgrade if you DON'T oc. you should be able to get your 4200+ up pretty close to 6000+ performance if oc'ing, but the 6000+ won't OC very well at all b/c it's already basically factory overclocked. If you don't oc, however, you'll be getting close to a 50% better oc (800mhz plus extra 1mb cache) for about $120 after you sell your 4200+. That's not bad and should give you quite a bit of extra life in that system.

Thanks for the help - I guess I'll stick with my current system for the time being. I'll probably hold out another year or so before making any drastic changes.

We all know how it is as enthusiasts, you've got the itch. If you've got the money, don't overclock, and will be happy with it even when AMD and Intel release their new stuff, then go for it. Even if you do overclock the 6000+ seems to be getting to 3.5 on air if your somewhat knowledgeable and a little lucky. It also should be noted that for about $30 more than the 6000, you could get a C2D E6750, which for Valve stuff should give you a huge jump. You'd have to get a new mobo and go through the pain of switching all your stuff over, but once you sold your CPU/mobo it would really be a good deal.

3.5???? maybe on water with a $150+ mobo. If you're good enough to oc that high then you'd probably get 3.0+ on the 4200+ anyway.
