I currently have 2 512mb sticks of corsair value ram, a dfi nforce4 lanparty, and an athlon 64 3000. If I wanted to go to 2gb, should I a) add 2 more 512mb sticks, or
b) sell the ones i have and get 2 1gb sticks

Option a would obviously be cheaper, but would option b be significantly faster?

What kind of Chip? Most AMD's won't run 4x512 @ DDR400 1T. Venice will do it @ DDR400 2t everything else is worse.

Option A is better of course except it's more expensive. Just like JMWarren said, some cpu's or chips will not run with 4 sticks without downgrading (increasing) the latency time.

It is a venice. I believe i'm running ddr400 2t right now, so does that mean there would be no performance loss when adding 2x512?

I chose this option. I do not notice any difference.
Of course, I do not "play" with benchmarks; I actually use my system.

If you are a benchmark fanatic, you'll notice the difference.. only in synthetic numbers..
