Upgrade from 1GB DDR3 AMD Radeon HD 6670 to the DDR5 version worth it for 20 bucks?

Ive come to believe that the ddr5 version of the 6670 is definitely quiet a bit faster than the ddr3 version because my friend and i have pretty much the same cpus and yet he can run shadows on high just fine without any stuttering issues and with anti aliasing. For me, if i try to turn shadows and anti aliasing on i lose a good chunk of fps and start to stutter..

So well anyways, just recently my friend upgraded to a GTX 660 so he asked me if i wanted to buy his ddr5 6670 for 20 bucks since he doesnt need it anymore and he knows i wont be upgrading my video card until maybe next year.. Do you guys think that'd be worth the upgrade? Or should i just save my 20 bucks?

I guess I don't agree. What will that 20% increase on an already low end card allow you to enable or play? Is it faster? Sure. But what is your tangible gain? I.e what game do you play that it will make better?

I guess when I consider upgrades, I like big jumps.

Just $20? Yes. Go for it, and sell your current 6670 for that much. @Tweak155 well of course he's not going to get a huge leap in performance, and it's not like he will get 1080p level performance, but if he's playing around 900p? That extra bandwidth will let him push a couple texture or antialiasing settings up.

Yep, that old 6670 will still make a solid upgrade for someone running an old mobo with onboard AMD4250/Intel video/Nvidia 7150/etc. So win/win, you get better gaming for basically free, and that old 6670 goes back into use.

Can you buy it, then try and crossfire the two cards and see how that performs? Then sell the old one if the crossfire doesn't work out.

And Crossfire works, but for some reason i get no sound sometimes when playing gtasa... And my fps is actually worse with two 6670s when playing gtasa.. Its like that for gta4 too.

But on skyrim, the two gpus give me more fps and everythings fine.

here is a hd7770 for 99 after rebate. yeah there are a few used hd6670 ddr5's for 65 bucks.

so if he got 50 and 65 for his 2 he could squeeze out that hd7770 from the egg.

help on crossfire. It just may not work well at all. Cross fire can be iffy.

You could try doing a different catalyst version then you are doing. what one are you doing.

Not quite sure about your sound situation. I personally disabled the sound outputs on my 2 x HD6870's when I was crossfiring (via with Windows Sound options).

Have you installed the latest Catalyst Application Profiles (CAP)? It's the 12.11 CAP 2 from the AMD site, released on 03/12/2012. There may be a profile in there which addresses your issue.

I found the best ways to get around CrossfireX issues are to use Google and see what other people have experienced. If this turns up nothing, disabling the second card for that game would be your next best option.

Are you using the HDMI output of one of the cards for sound? Maybe you don't have the HDMI plug plugged into the right card? Other than that, I have no idea.

Nope im not using HDMI, im using DVI.

edit: nvm about the sound issue, i discovered that i actually had an another audio output that the games sound went through disabled. I just enabled it and the sound works again.
