Upgrade for XP2400+ & Radeon 9800???

I currently have an Athlon 2400+ w/ 1GB RAM (PC2100) and an ATI Radeon 9800 AGP.

I have kind of gotten the itch to start playing HL2 again, but i'd like to crank up the resolution and eye candy a little bit more this time through.

My question is, is there a worthwhile video upgrade for ~$100 (used is ok)... or do you think the money is better spent getting a faster CPU/Mobo?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

That's a balanced system, so if you upgrade just the CPU or just the video you'll see little or no benefit because the one you don't upgrade will bottleneck.

6600 won't be as such even a upgrade.

if you have 9800pro, then 6600 is a down grade
6600GT over radeon 9800 non pro is an upgrade

try to oc the cpu to 3000+ speeds if it can

A very small upgrade.

That system is pretty well done as far as viable upgrades are cornered.

I'm in a similar situation myself and will probably pull the trigger on a Core2 or AM2 system sometime after the end of July price cuts kick in. Though I'm not really in any hurry, this system has lasted me much longer then I ever thought it would.

Yeah you're nicely paired with that. I had a Barton 2500+ and a 6800GT. Overclocked the Barton to 3200+ speeds....Got ~45FPS on 16x12, perfectly smooth in my opinion.

Its really up to you, but I suggest you wait *just* a little bit longer for Conroe/AM2, or at least the pricedrop. At your stage, a minor upgrade would not have much bang for buck (in terms of improvement). You'd feel a kabillion times better I bet if you waited for Conroe/AM2 and got a DirectX10 card. That would be the shiznit. Unreal 3, Farcry 2 (whatever it is called), etc....

nah....wait to build a new rig. You have a nice balance, although think maybe a faster processor might be in line but i wouldn't go over a 3000+. See if you can get a mild overclock

Thanks everyone for the advice. I guess i'll be staying with what I what I have for a while longer.

Thanks again.
