I don't know how good newegg's open box video cards are but you can find a x1900xt for about the same price as that x1800xt at the beginning of the thread. Here it is X1900XT open box

I don't know how you feel about overclocking and messing with your card but there was a deal in hot deals awhile back that was a x1800xl with 512mb of ram that was pretty much a rebadged 1800xt for $200 let me see if I can find the link. OPS it's out of stock. I don't know if/when they will get new ones but here is the LINK

EDIT: Link added

Xbox 360 :)[/quote]

A friend of mine did just that. His upgrade was not enough and he decided to return the card he had bought and got some deal from EBGames on the 360.

is that warranty only from newegg because powercolor has lifetime warrenty if I remember right. Even if the warrenty is only 15days isn't that better than most of the ATI board partners?

Sapphire's usually the best bet for ATI cards... if i remember correctly, the "built-by-ATI" cards that they used to offer were really just rebranded Sapphires. Also, I was wondering if you guys think I should step my 7600 GT up to a 7900 GT, or sell it and buy an X1800 XT. Oblivion will be one of the games I play, but I was also looking for everything else, like CSS, FEAR, Quake 4, UT2007, etc.

What about Oblivion's CPU demand? Would it go ok on a P4 2.4GHz? My wife wants it, but I told her it would not do well on her current GeF 4200.

The GPU limitation should be your main concern, hence the recommendations for an 1800XT or better (for 1280x1024).

The CPU can become a limiting factor in city areas (multiple NPC AIs), and I saw a healthy improvement OCing my Venice-E3 from 1.8 to 2.4GHz. The P4 @2.4GHz would struggle a little (and also benefit from OCing), but a strong graphics card (to match your gaming res/detail) is more important.

The handicap of a weak GPU can be reduced by using the "Old-blivion" mod that eliminates the DX9 pathways: the GF4200 should be able to handle this mod with your P4.
