I would like to upgrade my e6400. I was going to put in a q9550, but man the price is up to $230. I mainly game, but my wife also does transcription. an e8500 can be had for $180. Right now my e6400 is at 2.8 which is as High as I can get it stable.
I don't really want to do a whole system upgrade to the new core i systems so I am trying to eek as much out as I can. Suggestions?

What mobo are you using? Might as well give us an entire system component run down. An E8400 will overclock easily to 3GHz and more depending on your cooling. That would buy you some time as far as gaming goes. Maybe a year.

Looking at pricegrabber.com I see a E8400 on ebay for $144. Thats a quick look so I didnt get specifics. ASUS is showing latest bios of 1005. Supports these chips:

ntel® Socket 775 for Intel® Core™2 Extreme/Core™2 Quad/ Core™2 Duo/Pentium® dual-core/Celeron® dual-core /Celeron® Processors
Compatible with Intel® 05B/05A/06 processors
Support Intel® 45nm Multi-Core CPU
FSB800/1066/1333/1600

Thats just a quick look mind you. I'm not sure what you can and can not do as far as overclocking goes but if you can get a E8400 to 3Ghz on that mobo thats probably what I would do. You'll need a good hsf as well. As far as quads go I'd say wait til you build a brand new rig and then build around a i5 or i7 cpu. But thats just me. I'm now just liking quad performances for the first time.
