upgrade dilema

i have money to spend now, ive been working over xmas and done lot of double pay work so i have bout £800 to spend

im at uni so really i should jus stow this somewhere for later...which i would like to do.

but i also wanna upgrade this....

A64 3200 (newcastle) skt754
Asus K8NE-Deluxe
leadtek 6800gt
geil 1gb PC3200

now id be keeping everything but possibly the cpu an mobo

i wanna spend as little as possible but want to spend to merit the biggest gains in performance

do i

1) get skt 754 3700
2) new skt939 and 3500?
3)keep money
4)buy new ram and overclock
5)buy other things and save the rest?

You won't really get a huge performance differance with a cpu/mobo uggrade, you've already got a good system. Keep the money.

Can you overclock your 754? If so, you are really not missing out on any good sizable performance gain for a considerable chunk of cash. Not unless you want two 6800GT's in SLI.

ive had a think....seems more sensible to keep the money in a high interest account or something...jus keep adding to it everytime i get a job n get paid...that way ill have some money when i get out of uni in 5 years, help pay off the student loan.

my HD arent the fastest, they are samsung spin points on SATA interface. they have 8mb cache and Fluid bearings, they not the fastest, but the faster drives are like what 5 seconds faster at loading far cry? etc .... an i dont care......they are ultra quiet tho thats what i like

yeah i can overclock...the K8NE-Deluxe is no overclocking charm, but i can get 2.4Ghz stable, i tried 2.5Ghz by using a 230FSB but it crashed the instant i logged on to windows, also 225FSB froze the system half way through 3d mark 01

Makes sense. I've read good things about those Samsung drives. I wasn't thinking loading Far Cry....more like boot times.

Spend your money elsewhere...have a pint!

It is tempting. I know, I have the same system as you except I'm even worse off with a K8T with no PCI/AGP lock.

350 dollars I would need to spend for a Nforce 939 90nm A64. It's a large chunk of change. I do ever get so close in jumping the gun but then I just look at how well I can play every game on the market with the highest res and detail.

What the heck.!? Don't go buy a new cpu/mb/ram. Look for something you actually need. Do you need more HD space? A tv turner? How about a new monitor? Heck what about a kickass keyboard/mouse set or new speakers if you don't have a nice set. What I'm trying to say here is buy something that will make you pc expierence better b/c you already have plenty of speed.

Definitely don't buy a new cpu/mobo. If you have a 2.4 Ghz A64, you're already in the 99th percentile of performance (counting everyone, not just the nuts at AT 🙂 ). You would hardly notice a difference (maybe not at all) from a fx-55. The only thing that would benefit you noticeably would be going SLI and adding another GT. That would cost an arm and a leg and I agree with the others that say you're best off saving or adding storage/peripherals. It's a good problem to have though, huh?
