Did those boards have any particular features you were fond of? There are cheaper Z68 and even Z77 boards out there if it's not about a specific feature set.

That aside either of those boards would be fine, I don't really consider those cheap as there a few boards you can get for around $80 if you deal with rebates. Realistically when do you plan on upgrading to an 2500k?

Yes, I'll keep looking around and see if I come across a better deal. I was hoping to get the 2500k in about a year or so.

That would be pointless as the higher performing Haswell would be out by then. Intel CPUs just don't drop in price much.

Really the choice is between
- H67/H77 (whichever is cheaper) and i3 2120
- Z68/Z77 (whichever is cheaper) and i5 2500K

There's not reason to upgrade an i3 to an i5 within the same generation, and the i3 can't OC. Thus, you wouldn't want to pair a Z series board with a non-overclockable processor.

This pretty much. I asked when because if it was just a few months down the line, a Z board might be justifiable but if its a year+ then you could probably just grab the lower line of Haswell processors that come out around that time. I suppose you could wait till next year and buy a used 2500k but I wouldn't recommend it being your primary plan. I say go with something cheap-ish now and just save the money towards another platform upgrade later. Only issue I'd have with that is the Windows licenses.
