Wouldn't a better option just be to go for a D60 kit, that way I'd have the image sensor cleaning and the VR lens? Or do you not think that the D60 is a worthwhile upgrade from the D40 or D40x?

D60 has definite improvements over the D40. In addition to what you mentioned, it's faster, has better dynamic range, plus small running improvements. I think 996GT2 was trying to be sensitive to your budget.

Well, the lowest I've found online for the D60 Kit is $609 from BuyDig, so I'm not too concerned about the price at this point.

I also just remembered that I have $150 bucks coming back to me via PayPal in about two weeks for a MSN Live Search promotion I did a few months back when I bought my MSI Wind Notebook.

In that case D60 is definitely the way to go (unless you just completely throw the portability thing out the window, in which case a D80 body for $550 and 18-55mm VR for $120 would be yet another step up from the D60)

Btw, I was trying to keep the price low, but if you have the cash go for the D60. It does have some useful improvements over the D40.

The falling price of the d80 has made these decisions so much more difficult. Like ^ said, you could have a sweet setup for only $670 but then again the d80 is much larger/heavier than a d60 although that extra bulk comes with a lot more features.

I just bought the D60 Kit. Got it from Newegg for $619 + $11.47 shipping =$630.47. Throw in the 3% Microsoft Live Cashback Search Promotion and I got it for $611.90. Not bad I must say :)

OP has also stated he doesn't want to lug around a DSLR. Life is full of compromises, he should know his options.

OP - best bet would be to check photo web sites such as DPReview.com, DCResource.com, Imaging-Resource.com, etc.

I have an A650, and while I like it a lot, I can confirm that the performance from ISO200 up is pretty crappy. At ISO400 the noise is unacceptable to me, and given that this is a pretty high end P&S I would have to concur that the OP needs a DSLR with a larger sensor if higher ISO imaging is important to him.

Edit: and that's what he got... reading the whole thread ftw :).
