Upgrade Cable Modem???

I currently have a Toshiba PCX1100U cable modem I am leasing from the cable company. They offered to switch me to a "new" Motorola Surfboard cable modem (same cost). Is the motorola better than the Toshiba? Have there been any advances in cable modem technology that would make upgrading worth while from a practical standpoint? Thanks.

Advances? I doubt it. Is your connection very stable? If it is, I don't see any reason why you should switch. If they're offering to replace the Toshiba, they must have some kind of angle...

the only reason I could come up with, is to extend your lease, OR they are having troubles with the toshiba.

A cable Modem is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem, is a Cable Modem.

(The hint is it does not matter).

You have just been ferreted out for another income producing scam by your Cable Company. They are no longer making as much money from your original leased Modem compared to the kickback they apparently will get from Motorola. Simple as that.

At least the Cable Modem Industry is not quite of a closed Market like the DSL Industry. You can get that same Motorola Cable Modem from Best Buy and the Cable Company will not get their "kickback".

So, will a cable modem ALWAYS be a cable modem? As I am considering buying one of the Linksys modems from Best Buy for $50 and not giving the cable company its $5 anymore. But if the technology is going to improve somehow...

The reason I have been leasing it is that at the time I went cable, it would have taken many many months to "payoff" the cost of a cable modem (they were around $150-$200 at the time). But now that the prices are much lower, it will take less than a year to pay it off.

its just like anything else....it can only be upgraded so far. eventuallly the technology will surpass the hardware

As long as it supports the DOCSIS standard that your ISP's using, it should be fine. For example, if your ISP's on DOCSIS 2.0 and you're still on a Motorola SB3100/4100 that only supports DOCSIS 1.0/1.1 then you're outta luck - gotta change.

I'm putting my neck out here so don't assault me too much but from what I've gathered from my friend who takes care of this region's cable internet service fom charter they've seen very few issues from the Motorola modems and are a favorite and have dealt with problems better and had less failures from them than other modems like some of the RCA's. They may all be docsis but people have their favorites just like in the v.90/v.92 modem world 🙂

No matter what though just go buy your modem at bestbuy. It will probably be cheaper than what your cable company would sell it to you for, and it will work. You won't need to replace it before its already paid for itself.

If you buy for $50, and your current rent is $5, it pays the modem in 10 months. I doubt that any big technology breaks through will come through in the next 10 months.

And if a big break through comes in 8 months, you lost $10 WOW.

While technically yes.........I deal with modems every day (and night - LOL), some manufacturers do tend to have a much more "solid" product than others. That is, certain modems (motorola being a good example) have a much higher resistance to being knocked offline by minor signal issues.

I agree though, just go buy your own modem. The SB is a good choice.
