Upgrade Android (Eclair) to (Anything other than Eclair)

Hi there,

I have an Android phone, it's a Samsung Galaxy S. I have Eclair installed on my phone and I have never been able to update it because of the apparent issues with Samsung Kies.

Also, I have a Mac and I am only able to find ways to manually upgrade by rooting/flashing with 'Odin'—this is only a Windows-friendly program.

Can someone help me out or direct me in the right direction on how I can upgrade my Eclair to (anything other than Eclair) by using my Mac?

Make sure you pick the correct device tho as I think there is more than one Galaxy S

Looks like Heimdall is what you use on a Mac as far as I can tell

I am pretty sure development of root procedures and custom roms has been ceased with that device because the base kernel is no longer updated.

Most likely....But any developement other than stock as shipped should be a huge improvement for him.

The Galaxy s still has excellent support, there are very stable ICS roms out for it and a few Jelly Bean ones too.

I'm not sure if it will help, but if you're having problems with flashing because of your Mac, you could download a trial of VMWare Fusion or Parallels and install a copy of Windows 7, which will have a 30-day "trial" before forcing you to activate.

then i stand corrected. the way their site is laid out (i'm a fairly new member there) it appeared to not be listed. However the forum listing only displays the top devices by default and you have to click all or search to find an older one.

I would think the Galaxy S line would have fairly decent development support since its basically a Nexus S.

I'm sure what programs to flash on a Mac exactly, I know Heimdall doesn't have the same full feature set as Odin. I believe that you should still be able to root without too much trouble, and from there, it should be cake with Rom Manager.

I'm seeing several JellyBean roms in the Development forum, but you'll have to check out whats right for you.

The only Rom Manager I am able to find in Market is the Premium version for $5.99. Surely there has to be a free version somewhere...

While looking around for you I saw a post saying that Rom Manger doesn't work on the Fascinate. Most of the posts are older tho.

Looks like nothing but horror stories on the Fascinate and Mac as far as I see so far.

You don't know anybody with a windows computer?

One thing to note is that if you do fubar your phone you'll need Odin to recover it.

Hiemdall is the way to go. Works the same way on the s2 as well. While Odin is the perfect tool, there has to be a Mac side. Either way, the best way I'd imagine (not real familiar with the s1), is the same as the s2. Get a clockwork mod recovery and flash a ROM or whatever.

Xda is the best place to learn, but I'll tell you the same thing they will tell you. Read, read, read, read, then read some more, and don't forget to read. Flashing roms and mods can brick your phone quicker than anything else.

Moral of the story. Read and know what you're doing and it can save your phone. Personally, I'm running an s2 and have everything custom on mine. ROM, modem, and kernel. Plus I'm running off the latest stable source for my phone. I did the reading and learned what people taught me. And now, I know more about this phone than I've ever imagined I would.

I think though the AOKP-ICS builds are the currently most stable ROMs. theyre still working on JB, maybe not ready to be a daily driver yet.
