Probably OT for most of this group ...

Got an old P166 that my 6 year old has been using for kiddie games. Underpowered for most of that now. Wondering whether any recent off the shelf mbs will work in the case, or are those custom only for compaq. Flat AT desktop case w/ PCI riser.

Would like to get out of it for $300-400. Any chance, or better to upgrade altogether to a current low-end system.

Any suggestions/cost-estimates for a low-end system like this much appreciated!

I'm sure if you look around you can find a motherboard, an AMD Duron, and 128 MB RAM for under $250.00. If you use your other existing components you'll have a nice upgrade!

Any idea which MFR mbs to begin looking at? I probably should
have posted this in the MB forum... any way to switch now, or should I just restart the thread over there? Will also need video/sound if not built-in...

These all look nice. Don't think they're quite what I'm looking for though. I probably wasn't clear in my initial post. The Compaq case I've got has a single PCI-riser (bus extension? not quite sure of the proper terminology) perpendicular to the board. The PCI cards mount perp. to the riser, parallel to the MB. Slots in case only support this config.

Is this a special form factor? What type of board is this? As an aside, any references to a site that provides good detail on case/mb form factors would be appreciated. Didn't turn it up searching anandtech guides ...

$115 - with cpu + fan Duron 700
$28 - 128MB PC133 RAM
$17 - ATX Case with powersupply
$30 - 8mb 3d Video card (plenty for most games)
------------
190 + shipping... is that low enough? Im assuming you have a sound card and a hard drive...

Yup, Thanks! Time to scrap the compaq case. Still would like info on form factors, as this thing has to sit in a low-height shelf (3-4"). Pizza box would probably be fine for this system.
