Upgrade advice....

I'm looking to upgrade my main rig soon. I would like to upgrade the motherboard and switch over to DDR ram and possibly a new video card.

I'm looking at the SOYO SY-KT333 DRAGON Ultra (Platinum Edition). Does anyone have any better suggestions? I want to have overclocking abilities because i'm thinking about ordering another 1600+ and overclocking it. Also thought about just leaving my main rig the way it is and ordering another ecs board for my 1ghz tbird that is sitting here on my desk. I would like to overclock my 1600+ that I have now but I didn't unlock it and it's in a K7S5A and I haven't looked at how to overclock with this board.

I am open to ideas 🙂 I just want to get another rig crunching 😀

Very good OC mobo = Epox (8k3a).
You can use 2.2 vcore without modifications thought you probably wont do anything with this feature 🙂 (1.95 is the max for safe use I think).

Even better ones are the 8K5A(2/2+/3/3+) 🙂

As for gfx, any 128MB GeForce4 Ti4200 will be brilliant 🙂

And if you want some info on overclocking with the K7S5A get in touch with me via PM 🙂

Confused

I said 8k3a becouse its the one I have and Im really happy with it. Dont know about the others but veryone says that Epox makes good OC boards so I guess the others are good also.

Point taken 🙂😉

I have used the Soyo boards and have been very happy with them. I don't know that I would grab the platinum edition since there seems to be little difference between it and the Ultra other than the platinum paint job.

No it looks like they don't. I know they used to because that is where I ordered the last one I got. It looks like after I did some digging that they disco'ed the regular ultra and brought the price down some on the platinum (although not as low as the regular ultra used to be)

That sucks. I think i'm going to hold off on ordering a motherboard. I can't decide whether to order another 1600+. I have a 1ghz tbird sitting here waiting for a home, I don't really need another processor but it's so cheap. Oh the agony 😕

What are you looking for the machine to do? Is it going to mainly be for crunching or other stuff? The Soyo boards are great for systems where you want a lot of features on the board and still have some good overclocking. If you are wanting to build something and squeeze the most out of the 1600 then the Epox boards will really do that.

As far as the K7S5a, it has some limited overclocking if you get the right BIOS for it.

hehe - i know just how you feel! i have allocated $$ for pc stuffs just like a 401k 😀 (but MUCH smaller contributions for pc stuff). And have enough for an extra rig...do i need it, definitely not but they're so tempting to build!! 😀 too bad i don't wear the pants around the house and get yelled at if she smells parts 😀 (ok! i'm weak on the knees! i admit it!) 😛
