Upgrade Advice

Alright, I'm looking to upgrade my mobo, processor, and (since necessary) RAM right around the beginning of December. So my basic debate is Intel vs. AMD, but there are so many things to consider (since I've had setups with both AMD and Intel). I guess the main outside consideration is my sound card (SB Live! 5.1 Platnium) which is known to crackle with AMD setups. So I'm looking for input...obviously, go DDR with AMD, but with Intel, RAMBUS or DDR? SiS-645 or Intel chipset? Any input appreciated...oh, price-wise, I'm looking to spend about $300 total (though I know prices may change between now and then, keep in that kind of price range). Thanks in advance.

If I had $300 for an upgrade like that here's what i'd do:

1) ECS K7S5A Mobo: ~$60
2) 512 mb Crucial DDR Ram: ~$60
3) The FASTEST Athlon XP I could afford with the remaining $180

(or you could always just spend less)

If price/performance is important to you, AMD is definitely the way to go right now. Once the 845 chipset supports DDR, it will be closer, but right now, you either need to get pricey RDRAM ($168 for 512MB!) or be stuck with SDR DRAM.

The Sis 645 isn't out yet, and given the slow MB rollouts we've been seeing lately, it might not be out by early December.

Most likely your Live crackling problem is a config issue or MB chipset issue rather than an AMD processor issue, and at least for me, my Audigy works great on my KT266A chipset MB.
