I am looking at upgrade options and am trying to decide. My goal is to get better performance in the current games I play ( IL2, Lock-On) as well as other future flight simulators, which is mostly what I play. I won't be upgrading for a few more months.
My current system: Dell Dimension 4600: P4 2.8G, 1G pc3200 RAM, ATI 9800 pro, Antec 1080 performance plus case, 430 watt Antec True Power PSU, Thermaltake CPU cooler for AMD or P4. Here are the options I was considering.
1. Upgrade graphics card only to either Nv 6800 GT or ATI x800 xt (non PE version), get another year out of my current system and build a completely new system in a year or so.
2. Build an AMD system with a socket 939 AMD 3500, NForce4 mobo with PCI-e, x800 xt and reuse my RAM, CPU cooler case etc. My old system would go back into the Dell case and be used as a second computer.
My goal with the second option is to have a good platform for future upgrades as well as improve performance with the graphics card and processor. My hope is that both PCI-e and socket 939 will allow me to continue processor and GPU upgrades for some time. On the other hand, I am worried that the new BTX form factor might make the upgrade path of the new system quite short and I might be better off waiting for that too before building a completely new system. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.
