Can you still buy a 95 to 98 or ME upgrade? I have a friend that has a old computer with 95 on it, & it won't work with a new program he just bought. He doesn't want to do a clean fresh install of 98 or ME as he has a large membership database on the old 95 & is afraid of loosing his info.
Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Earle

It's getting pretty scarce. I haven't seen them in a while.

Remember though, that he will have to have the original Win95 software for the upgrade to install.

Yes, we do that at work, you have to buy a XP license and then get microsoft to "downgrade" the cd key to 98. basically getting 98 for the cost of xp. or at least that is the way it works with our valume licensings

Go to the For Sale Forum and asked do a WTB post. It will be a lot cheaper. My 98 upgrade is not second edition.

The only "modern" WIndows OS worse than Windows 95 is Windows ME. You should be able to find them, like was said, hit up the FS/FT forum.

Speaking as someone who upgraded from W95B to WinME and used the latter for about three years, I think this is a bit of an exaggeration. With all of its problems, ME worked a far sight better than 95 ever did. I think you may be remembering 95 rather generously. :)

I can't speak as to Win98, as I've spent little time using it. But I upgraded to ME instead of 98SE because ME offered far better support for WDM audio drivers, and for the most part it has served me well.

aye, but i'd never seen the "General Protection Fault" until i got ME :D, Win95B Plus! was ok, 98SE with Plus! was too, ME was shoddy and disappointing, never ever had a session w/o a single blue screen

I remember Windows 95 as someone who goes to a school and sometimes helps with the computers they get donated. Several of them have Windows 95. Several of them have Windows ME and several have 98. Since I use them all about the same, I think I "remember" them all pretty well. I have more problems with the Windows ME computer than I even have with the 95 computers. Granted, these computers are just for surfing the internet and playing some lame games and maybe typing, but the fact is that Windows ME (in my experience in this case) is crap compared next to Windows 95.

I have used them all one time or another. I know Win98 and ME are better than win95, but to me ME and 98 are just about the same. I used ME just because it has a better look. Win2K was a lot more stable though. Ofcourse XP is the best of Microsoft OS.

Windows ME is ME throwing the computer out the "window" after 47 BSOD's in one afternoon. Windows 98SE is the second edition of me out in society relatively calm after using my computer with comparatively few BSOD's. Windows XP is me experiencing one crash (due to a program error) in 6 months. Dear God the exctasy! I am now a free floating monk who passes on his Holy BSOD free emanations to all that he "experiences".
