I have an EVGA 640 MB GeForce 8800 GTS.
Thinking of upgrading and was wondering what's the fastest card I could run on an Asus P5B Deluxe (PCI Express x16) board? Or would I likely not see much of a difference?
CPU - dual core 2.4
RAM - 4 GB

You'll see a difference. One question is what game are you trying to improve?

Also, it's been a while since I've looked at revisions, but your x16 slot should at least be 2.0. You can still get a 3.0 card and use it in a 2.x slot without much (if any) bottleneck.

EDIT:

According to the other thread here, a single PCI 3.0 card will not be bottlenecked by 2.0 x16. Once you get into multiple GPU's then you MIGHT have to think about it.

Rage slows down in intense fighting. Want to play Battlefield 3 Eventually.
My monitor is my TV and it's only 1920X1080.
Don't really want to build a new PC if an upgrade will work.

you need a faster cpu too then.

Exactly. A core i3 is the bare minimum and even that can't max out at 1080p, but mid-high should be fine when coupled with a fast gpu. With a 470 oc prolly med will be fine

Best solution - Buy a new card and if it doesn't fix your issue, upgrade the rest :).

Why don't you overclock the CPU and grab a cheap GTX 460 or 6850. Should play BF3 @ 1080P Low/medium settings.

A core 2 duo at 2.4 is too slow for modern games imo. If you don't want to do a complete upgrade I would get a used Q6600 for $70ish and overclock it to 3.2 or so. Sell your E6600(?) for $30 and its not a bad upgrade for $40.

Op,i would go for a cheap i3 2100/h61 mobo combo and match it up with a 6870/gtx560 and have a very cheap affordable system,a couple of the forum members are happy with this set up,me myself was included with the i3 2100,its a wonderful starting point for performance processor wise.

Even a i3 2100 would be worlds better just as a stand alone upgrade with a cheap motherboard which in many games would be a much better upgrade and your 8800 should hold out for a little bit if budget is a main concern, then you could get the gpu of your choice later.

Been there,done that trust me.

Thanks for the input so far. Probably gonna build or buy a PC since it seems that upgrading will be a short term band-aid.

Another question;
Seeing as how I will be gaming on a TV at 1920X1080, how much computer do I need to play games with full eye candy?
Do I need an i7 and GTX680?

Or would an i3-2120 3.3GHz and 1GB GT 545 work?

If you can afford it get 3570k plus 680 however a 3570k plus 7850 would be okay for most games as well without aa and stuff of course. And I assume the 7850 will be heavily Oced like 30%+

A GT545 most certainly would not work. That barely qualifies as a gaming card, and is only available to OEMs. In fact, it's probably slower than your 8800GTS.

I3 2100 and a gtx460/6870 is all most gamers need, some games make better use of a quad core but this is really the bare minimum you should need for 1080p.

A buddy of mine a few months ago finally ditched his e6600 and his 4850 after what seemed like 6 years and one video card upgrade, his original being a 7900gto ,and he used it till basically he felt he needed a upgrade as he isn't one to waste money on computer parts,so you got a pretty good amount of time from it gaming wise as did he.

Good luck and let us know how what you decide to go with.
