Upgradable GPU's

My first computer was a laptop (380Mhz and ATI Rage Mobility Pro), and almost immediately I began to lust for flightsims that all but overwhelmed the GPU. And I was really disappointed when I found out I couldn't uprgrade anything but the RAM.

Now some mnftr's are touting "user upgradable GPU's", but I haven't seen any upgrades yet-and no hints as to how much they would cost, or anything.

I'm just wondering what your thoughts are on this subject.

Well, if there's a "mini-AGP" port in a laptop, I suppose it could be done.

But I have a feeling it will be like any mini-PCI devices: Outrageously expensive. Not to mention the risk that the standard will go the way of the OverDrive socket (anybody remember that?)

From all my reasearch up to this point the only company with upgradable Graphics is *ell. And that is only on their XPS laptop. AND they have no pricing on this yet either.

Well I can't say anything on pricing as of yet, but manufacturers like Dell, Alienware, and Voodoo already offer upgradable CPU's, GPU's and even motherboards. I've talked to the people at Voodoo that have told me that all their laptops are "almost" completely upgradable. You can ask them yourself regarding the issue, but I do know that many laptop companies are beginning to offer upgradable video cards. You guys should check it out.

all voodoo laptops reuire a whole motherboard upgrade to upgrade the GPU.

even their old M:355 which had the GPU on a removeable daughtercard requires a new motherboard to get the 9700 in it (from a 9000)


Alienware is the only company that offers a USER upgradeable GPU solution, its proprietary and isn't doing so well.

hopefully when the pci express form factor makes it into laptops this will all change
