Updating the drivers for this eServer x205

Here is the set up as determined by the IBM website. I've opened it up and it is stock.

P4 1.8GHz/400MHz (512KB), 256MB PC133 ECC SDRAM, 40GB EIDE HDD, 48X-20X CD-ROM, Ethernet, PCI, 8MB ATI Rage XL, Tower, (6x7)


I currently have no sound. Since sound is on board I was trying to get it up and operational.

I also have 3 unknown devices in my hardware configuration I'd like to remove. This is also how i know the system is stock as there is nothing installed in any of the PCI slots nor the AGP slot.

what I"m looking to do:

1) remove these unknown hardware problems on this computer listed under other devices: multimedia Audio controller, unknown device, unknown device.

2) ACtivate sound on motherboard.


any help is appreciated.

What OS are you running? If its windows based, download unknown devices and see what they say.

It's quite a long list but I'll update everything tonight and touch base after that.

Its a program called unknown devices. has a database of alot of the devices not detected by windows xp.

Alternatively, sometimes you can open the properties of the device, look at the hardware ID, and google it.

But definitely get the items off the ibm website. I had thought you had already done this, sorry for the assumption :).

Alot of the ones on there you aren't going to need. for example, CD/DVD drivers you wont need.

I would start with:

Chipset
Critical Update
Audio
Networking
Video

And then see what you have left.

crap there is a lot to update...

Well i've downloaded all that plus the RSA update and Update Express.

Nothing has been installed just yet because in order to update the RSA I need to update the bios. How do I update the bios without a floppy? I may be able to find one at work or somewhere around here but just in case I'd like a plan B.

BIOS also comes as an ISO, so you can put it on a CD as well. Alternatively, a USB floppy will work.

well i just found some floppy disks at work but I'll keep the iso in mind since I do have a usb drive.

as for rsa or rsaII I have no idea? I stared at the mb a few days ago and got nothing. There is nothing in the control panel and the manual that did come with this computer (found in the basement of a friend;s apartment taht he bought) is for a x206 or x207...I have the x205.

The original RSA card will have a VGA port on it, and when installed will also be the VGA controller.

Get the manual from the links posted, the site is a bit confusing but you can find it.

I hate floppies, but sometimes we still have to use them. try another floppy if you have one. The cd is the way to go tho.

Updated the bios just fine. CD worked great.

I "think" I've updated the chipset. Followed the directions but had to run the program twice. It asked for a reboot the 2nd time. Checked device manager for the supposed installed INF files and was able to determine these were in fact listed on the device manager:

Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM I/O Controller Hub
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM SMBus Controller - 24C3
Intel(R) 82801DB Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 24CB
Intel(R) 82801DB LPC Interface Controller - 24C0
Intel(R) 82801DB PCI Bridge - 244E


there was an additional one listed under USB called 24CD and it was for USB 2.0.

not certain if what i'm looking at is the RSA card but the video is attached to the extender card, has a Rage XL chip on it, and googling some of the barcodes gets me back the exact same thing that it says it is.

If RSA stands for Remote supervisor adaptor it does not appear to be installed and there is in fact an opening in the PCI slots so it might of been there if it ever was if I'm guessing right.

I believe what you're referring to is the SCSI update utility. And yes, if you have an IDE drive the update does not apply.
