Updating Profile

I have tried several times since registering on this forum to update my profile, but it fails each time. Is this by design, or is it going to be fixed?

1. Go to Forum Issues
2. Type "profile" in the search box at the top.
3. Read the threads and see if the solution is there .
4. Tell us what works for you.

From the long list of threads relating to this subject, I looked through a number of them that appeared as though they might be related, and none of them ever received a useful answer. So, I assume that the same will be true here. I have no special characters involved, I receive no error messages, it does appear that it is updating normally, but it remains as it was from the beginning. It doesn't even show the state in which I live properly, even though I included it in the original registration. However, if this is not significant to the forum, I guess it's not significant to me.

Well, since we have so little to go on -
are you trying to update your email address? Are you using one of the forbidden providers? Are you using security software? Antivirus? Firewall?

I not sure why it matters, but as I said, I tried to change the city and state in which I live, and I also tried to add a signature block. I have no idea of what you mean by forbidden providers, and while I normally run AV and firewall, at the moment, all that I have running is the Windows firewall. Since the problem does not appear to originate from my end, I would assume that it is at the forum's end. This is not the kind of problem that I have ever had on any forum before, and I have registered with alot of them.

There are a number of email providers which are outright banned from registering accounts. If you created an account before they were banned you'll still exist, but be unable to update your account. I'm going to guess you're using a free email provider, which is banned.

I can't see how that could be the problem, because I attempted to update the profile immediately after registering. I suppose that it is theoretically possible that the ban was placed in the couple of minutes between the two moments, but I seriously doubt that. However, to eliminate all possibilities, is there a list somewhere of these banned IPs?

Thanks, I checked the list, but my provider wasn't included. Somehow, I've got a feeling that this has something to do with the website cookies. but I just finished weeding out my cookies and all that I found was a set for anandtech.com and another for forums.anandtech.com. Is there any others that I should have?

I've been working with the cookies for a while now. Even though I picked up another set of cookies from dynamic.anandtech.com, it has gotten worse. Even though I can login and post on the forum, ;I can't get to my profile at all. It claims that I'm not logged in. I'm just about convinced that this is a cookie problem, but I have no idea of what to do to fix it.

I had the exact same problem.

My email address which was registered long ago, is not on the FAQ list of banned addresses, and I could not change my avatar, city, or state.

When I clicked on "Update Profile", the page reloaded, but there was no acknowledgement of a change, and the same old information remained. There was no error message.

I tried with both FireFox and IE.

I then turned off my software firewall (ZoneAlarm Pro), and tried again. My profile was updated!

I have no idea why this worked. I've never had a problem with posting in the forums.

Shutting down the firewall didn't help, but it did inspire a fix. I though that my localhost proxy might be interfering, but turning it off didn't help either. I then turned my cookies back on and enabled referrer logging, one of the two did it. Since I had turned the cookies on before, I assume that it was the referrer logging. If so, I have no idea of what that has to do with this forum. Anyway, I made the update and set everything back as before. Thanks for the hint.
