Updating Linux from an FTP server.

I've an old SuSe Linux 6.3 installation that I want to update to the version after SuSe 7.0 (I guess 7.1, but who knows?) and since I've cable internet, I thought that I could simply download the update from SuSe's FTP server and install it.

Am I wrong in this assumption?
